Branding 10,000 Lakes

A co-worker forward this link to me. Quite an undertaking. I really like all the lakes done so far. Great style.

From the Designer:

Lake logos have a tendency to be, well, fairly ugly. This project was created to rethink what they could be.

One Minnesota Lake. One Logo. Every day.

Should only take a little over 27 years to hit 'em all. Stay tuned and enjoy!

Simply brilliant.

Simply borrowed, and very badly executed.

A crappy Shutterstock image

Actually, it is very possible that it is traced from the Shutterstock image now that I look at it.

Yeah I thought of that Bud campaign. I still like that logo however. Also, there is about 11,500 lakes in Minnesota... So I'm thinking more like 30 years if they do this one at a time.

According to the Minnesota DNR it's 11,842 to be exact. :P

Does no one care that she's stolen an idea and traced a stock photo for one of these, let alone that some of them really aren't very good?. How many more of these will be stolen or traced?

Is tracing a photograph really so bad?

But isn't it making your own image based off the original?

The short answer is no. This is the reason Shepard Fairey had to settle with AP for his HOPE poster. The illustration of Barack Obama was traced from an AP image.

Tracing a photo is probably the 'least offensive form of infringement' (if that even exists), but beyond that, the exact idea of using a splash to form a crown has already been done multiple times in multiple industries. Using a photo as the backbone of an illustration is different than tracing a photo and calling it done. It may be a fine line, but both this and the HOPE poster firmly fit in the latter.
