mania
Not a Padres fan, but he's pitched like a strong #2 for the last few years. I don't see him as a 1, will probably never be one, but in a year where the NLC should be weak, weak, weak, it's a move that signals the Reds are going all-in for a playoff run. He could provide the staring depth you need to bring you over the hump.He was also one of the NL leaders in Ks and ERA, too.
pmoehrin
More Met dirt.http://hardballtalk....-david-einhorn/I tend to believe it because even if you read what's been going on with the Mets badly, you know the Wilpons want no part of any deal where there's a chance they will have to give up majority ownership of the team. This days after it became known that the Mets have taken out a $40 million loan from Bank of America.I'm going to go out on a limb and say this will be the last year Wilpons own the Mets. Either they're going to be forced to sell at some point during the season or it will be announced they will be selling at season's end. I think letting Jose Reyes walk was the end of the Wilpons rope. Its wasn't part of some rebuilding effort. You don't get rid of your best player at the peak of his career and improve either short or long term. It was a salary dump. If I'm Bud Selig my attitude is either the Mets start showing they no longer have cash flow issues by the end of the season and will be able to operate as a big market team by 2013, or the Wilpons are gone. Simply put get your act together or sell the club. They've had plenty of time to find minority owners as well. I'd give them to the end of the year and then they're no longer allowed to give out bids for stake in the club. If you can't find the right minority owner in 2+ years of searching, what your looking for probably doesn't exist and I seriously doubt anyone is going to just hand over the Wilpons anything more then $5 without wanting at least some insurance if they can't be paid back and from what I can tell that's exactly what they are asking for. Just give us some money and go away. Maybe we'll pay you back sometime in the future but who knows?
CS85
By the time Pujols takes his 16th at-bat of the 2012 season, he will have made enough money to max out the cap of any WNBA franchise. AlMagz
the Reds should have traded Votto and kept Alonso. They would have got way more value for Votto. And there is no guarantee they will be able to pay him once he hits FA. 4 guys is a lot for Latos. Being the #1 on Padres is basically a #2 possibly #3 for some other stronger rotations. @AlMagz

They're really high on Yonder Alonso, but the Reds seem to think that this is the best team they're going to get so go for it now. I tend to agree with that rationale. This is a team that made the playoffs two years ago, and is a better team for next year after making that deal. Mat Latos takes a below average pitching staff and makes them above average to help out a team that was 4th in the NL in OPS.And this isn't a young team anymore. Brandon Phillips is 30, Votto is 27, Rolen is 36, Arroyo is 34. Only Chapman, Bruce and Leake have any real upside to them anymore. Everyone else is pretty much as good as their going to get. If they don't go now I don't know what they're waiting for.

To get Latos who only has upside really (career record of 27-29) and trade Volquez who has similar numbers but then throw in Alonso who could be a future star for your organization doesnt really seem smart to me. Volquez had 1 good season, 17-6 in 08, and has been hurt so I can understand why you dont want to wait around for him anymore. It seems as if the Reds wanted Latos just to stay healthy and eat innings. He was 9-14 last season in the NL west which isn't a great division as it is. And now he has to pitch to the Brewers, Cardinals (albeit minus Pujols), and the Cubs (who I expect to be better once they sign Fielder). The timing of this trade is what really surprises me, if I were the Reds I would have tried to contend and this sounds like a perfect Trade deadline deal to me. But I have been wrong before. @AlMagz

But if you're talking guys with solid Big League service time, then I see your point. Mancakes: The Bandhttps://twitter.com/FloydNimrod

NEW.ERA
Well Buster Olney (Biggest idiot around) thinks the Rangers were the highest bidder. I really hope the Jays land Darvish, that'd be easily one of the most dangerous young rotations in the majors. d_hav
If the Rangers indeed sign Darvish and can also sign Prince Fielder, they would have essentially matched the Angels this off-season. I know Darvish is somewhat of an unknown but I think C.J. Wilson is overpaid and I don't think he'll sustain top of the rotation stuff. Darvish could be a complete bust though so it's a pick your poison kind of thing. I remember I was really interested in Dice-K with his "gyroball"? but we all see how that ended up, but if Darvish is as expected he will be more valuable than Wilson. Now with Pujols and Fielder, the Angels will have the better player for 4-5 more seasons(who knows) but Fielder is younger and less expensive. It would be nice to see this all come to fruition because it would be refreshing to have a (using words freely) new division rivalry talked about other than the same Red Sox/Yankees girlfriend/boyfriend stuff. mania
The Rangers had scouts at every single Darvish scout, flew Washington over to meet his family... they put more work into him than anyone in the league, and if they think his stuff can play, they've had a pretty good track record the last few years. Even with the report of a bid of over $50M, the team owes former general partner $25-30M, spent $12M on stadium improvements, and will have to deal with not only signing Darvish for this year, but Hamilton, Napoli, and Lewis are free agents a year from now. Kinsler has a $10M club option for 2013, Nelson Cruz has two year of arbitration so he is up in 2014. And then there is the thought of buying out Holland like the Rays do and Elvis. Sadly for them their new cable contract does not start until 2015, too. So that is a difference of $60M/year from their existing contract. The team could get a "signing bonus" but won't equal the annual price from the new deal.
