Expansion Teams in all 4 major leagues

My thoughts: I agree with worcat. Bringing back all these old names is kind of boring, TBH. There are some new ones, but why not come up with a new identity for each[b/] team in the expansion? Otherwise, everything is predictable. Whalers & Nordiques I would keep, but the rest should be something new IMO.

Ok, just so I'm clear on this: do you mean new locations or new team names, but same location?

Like instead the Kansas City Scouts, it could be the Kansas Wheat, Arkansas Blades, Rochester Tigers, etc etc?

Whatever makes the most sense. One small part to a successful identity (IMO) is coming up with names for teams that have meaning past "that's what they were before". Look at all the recent franchises-- they're mostly specific to the city in some way, not a generic team name that 'sounds cool', like Wildcats or Tigers.

Also, look at the viability of the expansion. Would the team survive in said city?

Obviously, this is your project. I just think it's a lot more fun when there's thought put into it. When you have a solid backing (IE proof, need, statistics, etc.) for your expansions, it makes it a lot more believable.

Hey guys,

We've decided on our 10 NHL expansion teams:

Des Moines Raccoons

Arkansas Bears

Hartford Whalers

Quebec Nordiques

Kansas City Scouts

Halifax Acadians

Thunder Bay Superiors

Rochester Americans

Hamilton Tigers

Milwaukee Admirals

EASTERN CONF:

Atlantic: Boston, Florida, Halifax, hartford, New Jersey, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Washington

Northeast: Buffalo, Carolina, Hamilton, Montreal, Nashville, Ottawa, Pittsburgh, Quebec, Rochester, Toronto

WESTERN CONF:

Central: Arkansas, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Des Moines, Detroit, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Minnesota, St. Louis

Pacific: Anaheim, Calagry, Colorado, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose, Thunder Bay, Vancouver, Winnipeg

Thoughts?? I might switch Nashville and Columbus so Arkansas can have. "natural" rival with Nashville.

Will probably work on NFL next....

Thanks!

I didn't get to share in time, but I wish you had either Seattle or Portland included for the NHL, as the US Pacific Northwest is pretty bare.

As for the NFL & MLB:

MLB

Carolina Flyers (Wright Bros.)

Portland Orcas

Exploradors de San Juan (Puerto Rico)

NFL

Los Angeles Aztecs

San Antonio Defenders (cavalry, cannons, etc.)

New Mexico Nighthawks (think this, since they were based there)

Oklahoma Outlaws

Vancouver Villains

Ok, after reading drdough's posts and I have to agree with him. It just seems a little boring to me now to "bring" every old team back and put them in the league. So based on his opinions, I've made several changes:

Western Central

Arkansas Blades*

Chicago Blackhawks

Dallas Stars

Des Moines Raccoons*

Detroit Red Wings

Kansas Twisters*

Milwaukee Admirals*

Minnesota Wild

Nashville Predators

St. Louis Blues

Western Pacific

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim

Calgary Flames

Colorado Avalanche

Edmonton Oilers

Los Angeles Kings

Phoenix Coyotes

San Jose Sharks

Thunder Bay Superiors*

Vancouver Canucks

Winnipeg Jets

Eastern Atlantic

Boston Bruins

Florida Panthers

Halifax Acadians*

Hartford Whalers*

New Jersey Devils

New York Islanders

New York Rangers

Philadelphia Flyers

Tampa Bay Lightning

Washington Capitals

Eastern Northeast

Buffalo Sabres

Carolina Hurricanes

Columbus Blue Jackets

Hamilton Bulldogs*

Montreal Canadiens

Ottawa Senators

Pittsburgh Penguins

Quebec Nordiques*

Rochester Tigers*

Toronto Maple Leafs

* - expansion teams

I know there are still a few "old" teams but I think they would work just fine in that. And most of the expansion teams are now more "new"

Thoughts?

I've had much fun playing with the concept of a third MLB league, so I've got a lot of concepts I'd like to eventually share on here when I get things presentable. Let me offer some of my favorite team identities.

3: Portland Beavers

4: Montreal Expos

5: San Antonio Missions

6: New Orleans Cajuns

7: Las Vegas Superstars

8: New Jersey Guards (Atlantic City, NJ)

9: Richmond Rebels

10: Indianapolis Stallions

NFL

1: Iowa Barnstormers

2: Arkansas Outlaws

3: Los Angeles Hills

4: Utah Knights (Salt Lake City, UT)

5: Oklahoma Okies

6: Mexico Warriors (Monterrey, Mexico)

7: Vancouver Lumberjacks

8: Portland Whalers

9: Canton Cougars

10: Toronto Tyrants

NBA

1: Iowa Monks (Des Moines is French for "The Monks" and it's all I've got)

2: Arkansas Diamonds

3: Seattle Supersonics

4: Kansas City Princes

5: Santa Fe Desert Foxes (regal term to go with fellow regal terms "Royal" and "Chief")

6: Mississippi Rivers

Your ideas/suggestions would help me a lot! Thanks a bunch!

Also I want to add a few pictures of the excel spreadsheet where I've realinged the league according to the expanded teams:

NHL:

ExpandedNHL.png

Teams in ABC order

I'm somewhat "final" with the NHL.

NFL:

ExpandedNFL.png

Expanded teams listed last in their division (1 per division)

I would say that I'm about halfway done with the NFL but I feel very confident about this. I do might need some help with the NFL realignments tho.

If you swap Carolina and Tampa Bay for Dallas and Arkansas, you have a lot better regional breakdown in the NFC. Maybe swap Indy and Kentucky in the AFC, but other than that, it looks like a good layout for the NFL.

I can understand where you're coming from for the NFC South/East. However, the Cowboys already have a strong strong rivalry with the other 3 "orignal" teams (Giants, 'Skins and Eagles) so I may keep them in there.

I might swap Arkansas with either Tampa Bay or Carolina tho.

I will most likely swap with Indy/Kentucky. More Brady-Manning match-ups! yay!

Thanks for the feedbacks!

Also, how do you think the team names look for the expansion teams for the NFL? No more "old" teams, right? haha

Just a thought for your NHL alignment, but Thunder Bay should definitely not be in the Pacific. Swapping them with Dallas, Des Moines or Kansas would seem to make the most sense.

how about halifax destroyer sor yukon polar bears. the regina rails also sounds good for canadian teams. in the nfl, new jersey knights, detriot gladiators and las vegas aces also work

In the last game against Detroit, the time from ten minutes left to one minute left was probably the longest nine minutes of my life. But from one to zero was probably the greatest time I've ever had. I didn't want the clock to run out. It was such a great feeling: people crying in the stands, people jumping up and down, people cheering. Guys couldn't even sit up on the bench. It was probably the best minute of my life.

Ah, the "I'm kidding" - the universal internet excuse for saying something that others perceived as dumb.

For your NFL league, how about switching Canton to the NFC North and Iowa to the AFC North. I just think that 3 teams, all from Ohio, in the same division would be a little much. I would also somehow get New Mexico into the NFC West, seeing that it is far more "western" then St. Louis. Just my 2 cents :)

+1 to this. I would also swap Carolina and Tampa, seeing as how Tampa is much closer the the South teams, and Carolina is closer to the East teams. It might help to map something out to make sense of it, that way you can keep the divisions fairly regional (if that's what you're going for).

@RR I would switch Halifax with Carolina in the NHL, and Memphis w/ one of the Texas entries in MLB (most likely expansion San Antonio).

@anythinglogos Definitely feeling the "Vancouver Orcas" name...if the Canucks' owners were to make a play to bring the NBA back to Vancouver, that name'd be PERFECT!

I know that you're basically done with the NHL ... but I LOVE the idea of incorporating Anchorage into a newly expanded league.

Based on what you have above, I would ditch one of your mid-western teams, Kansas for arguments sake. Then move Dallas over to the Western Central group, and then add the Anchorage Moose (or whatever) to the Pacific group. It would be a unique attraction as the only Alaskan team in pro-sports ... and Sarah Palin could be the #1 ticket holder ... oh, wait a minute! :)

Get on board with the Anchorage Moose!

Anchorage would be an ideal spot for NHL with the population of that area of around 300,000 and good sponsorship opportunities.

For the NFL to make it 40 teams. I would do...

Los Angeles Comets

Portland Pioneers

Utah Jacks (Represent Jack Rabbits or Lumberjacks not 100 on this name)

Las Vegas Spades

Oklahoma City Marshalls

San Antonio Rebels/Outlaws/Vipers/Bandits (One of those four)

Virginia Crushers (or I liked Navigators stated above)

Toronto Cougars

Solid Names and solid geography wise.

Sorry to be joining in so late on the thread, but I just wanted to suggest a change for the Halifax Acadians. Acadians are usually association more closely with New Brunswick rather than Nova Scotia. The population of Acadians in Halifax is minimal which is why I suggest the team be named Halifax Schooners. The great shipbuilding tradition in Nova Scotia, associated with the fact that the name was already suggest for a CFL team, would make it a perfect fit for the NHL.
