BigMac12
I really think the move is a downgrade. The old wordmark was iconic. Then new wordmark is just generic.

sc49erfan15
Boring, yes - but the previous wordmark looked extremely dated and overall just didn't fit with the uniforms and identity. If the worst downgrade is a -10 and the best upgrade is a 10, this is comparable to about an 0.5. Sure, it's boring and generic, but it fits the schools uniforms and identity well.
ESTONES6
I think the old wordmark could have worked, but they kept it on an italic which didn't relate well to the football uniforms. I think if the same style font was used but without the italic, it would have been a much better wordmark for the school. The new block font seems pretty generic. Can someone confirm that it is generic and not even a custom word mark? BroadSt_Bully
The new wordmark, as shown in an e-mail from one downtown retailer, is not accurate at all. The new official wordmark is simply "PENN STATE" in Helvetica. I, personally, hate it.I'm not sure why the retailer chose that block Porn Star Academy font to illustrate the phasing out of the old "tennis ball" wordmark. Varsity Blue
It's kind of surprising they would trade in the old one, which is so identified with Penn State, for such a basic typeface.

winters in buffalo
If the roles were reversed and the block font was being replaced by the tennis ball / racing tire font, this place would erupt in protest.

Even a simple block font is a measurable improvement. The Green Bay Packers Uniform Database! Now in a handy blog.
Titanole
As is usually the case, a design made to look modern will eventually just look dated. A classic design, while possibly boring, rarely does. You know, say what you will about America. Thirteen bucks still gets you a hell of a load of mice.
