Shmee
I don't think a pitcher should be the captain. If the rules were similar to hockey, where a captain gets to speak with the officials, it would have to be an everyday player. A starting pitcher is only out there one every five days. He may be a calming presence in the dugout, but an on-field captain needs to be out there most of the time. Hafta agree here. The NHL forbids goalies from wearing a Captain's C or Assisstant's A on their sweaters because a) they already have the most difficult job on the playing surface and because many teams split time between their goalies, so that a netminder might play as little as 40-45 games a season (consider Fernandex and Rolosson on the Wild) and still be considered a starter. Thus, a pitcher, who only plays 1 out of every five games as a starter, or doesn't even enter the game till the 5-8th innings like a reliever/closer, would not be a good choice to lead the team in EVERY inning of EVERY game. habsfannova
You guys do know that A doesn't mean ASSISTANT, it means ALTERNATE. Captain's need ALTERNATES if they are not on the ice; they don't need "assistants"
Shmee
Yeah, but announcers seem to use them interchangeably. Assisstant, Alternate, whatevaaaaaaaaaaa. The world's foremost practitioners of professional tag-team wrestling.
habsfannova
Uh, if announcers said that Canada was part of Germany, would that make it true? Nope.
Shmee
Uh, if announcers said that Canada was part of Germany, would that make it true? Nope. Dammit. I need a new map. My current one has the big country above the US labeled Deutchland Nord. The world's foremost practitioners of professional tag-team wrestling. Kanada über alles!Anyway, back on track, just because the announcers make mistakes, doesn't mean the term changes.Using that, I don't think Alternate captains have any use in baseball, becasue all the fielders are on at the same time. Unless it's the pitcher stuff, or the captain is injured. So, A's would be next to useless.
