_____ > Ron Parker, phenomenon

Not sure how many board members are aware, but ESPN "journalist" Ron Parker wrote one of the worst articles ever published on an ESPN website today. He actually started off with a decent point, but his writing, lack of statistical data to back up, and numerous typpos (which have been slowly edited out) offended tons of Atlanta fans.

He's received thousands of comments today, nearly all from Atlanta fans. A phenomenon has started where everyone is using the (______) > Ron Parker comment. His wikipedia page was edited three times today, already.

Also, ESPN apparently made him edit out a very racist sentence that was posted earlier in the article. It was replaced. Follow this link and read the comments section, and prepare to laugh.

I hope the Falcons destroy the Giants on Sunday. No offense to any Giants fans.

I wouldn't think twice of it.

I really don't understand what the point of the article was other then to say that southern cities don't support pro sports teams unless they win. That doesn't mean they don't care about sports though. College football and NASCAR are far bigger sports down south there then they are up north and take away alot of the support that would otherwise go to the Falcons, Braves and Hawks.

You also might want to change the topic title, unless this is some sort of bad attempt at making fun of him by giving him a different name.

I thought this was about the "guy" that was supposed to host Cheap Seats.

Yeah I opened this hoping the Sklar's were coming back with new episodes of Cheap Seats. Bummer.

(btw, Ron Parker was played by Michael Showalter, a funny guy)

I love the way you laugh, and I love the way your hair smells, and I love it that sometimes for no reason you're late for shul, and I don't care that you're bow-legged, and I don't care that you're bilingual!

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

I didn't say that the article was well-written, only that Atlanta has attendance issues.

And the SB Nation response is not only equally poorly-written, but has huge logical holes. That the Braves and Falcons rank "in the top half" of their respective sports' attendance bolsters Parker's point, it doesn't rebut it.

His basic point stands, though. Atlanta is a terrible pro sports town in terms of attendance.

If that offends Atlanta fans, then they should start going to games.

It's kind of hard for Atlanta fans to fill the Dome for a game being played in New York.

It's been nearly a decade since the Falcons have had a home game blacked out. How come that wasn't mentioned?

Ever since Michael Vick got to Atlanta the Falcons have been drawing well, but prior to that they had argubly the worst fanbase in the NFL.

I think his arrival really turned things around for the Birds in terms of local support and the fact that they've done so well after he left has maintained that. Had the Falcons not found success under Matt Ryan I think its very likely that they would have sunk right back down to the level of fan support they had prior to VIck.

As of now I wouldn't say its fair to call the Falcons a fair weather fanbase. Had they dropped off attendance wise after Vick left I would say its fair to call them that, but the fact they haven't shows that this is a city that cares about the team more then the success of one player.

I'm not sure when it happened exactly, but years ago there was a fire at Fulton County Stadium which took out a few skyboxes. One Pittsburgh radio friend of mine summed it up nicely on the air, "Typical Atlanta revitalization project." I love Atlanta as a city, but when it comes to sports (moreso than a number of cities I could name), if you aren't winning, they aren't grinning - and they aren't showing up at the turnstiles, either.

That would have been July 20, 1993. Oddly enough, I was in Atlanta when it happened. It was my first time ever being anywhere in Atlanta other than the airport. It was also Fred McGriff's first game with the Braves. We were driving through town on I-75 when the reports of the fire started coming in on the radio.
