College Football 2012 Season

Am I the only one who doesn't miss that cartoonish, thoroughly non-intimidating devil in footsie pajamas? If you're going to name your team the Devils, you've got to run with it and look as badass as possible.

Not to mention, their current uniforms are infinitely more memorable than any other uniforms they've worn in the recent past (other than those Adidas Crillee nightmares, which were memorable for the wrong reasons). I feel I have a very good knowledge of college football uniforms, being a lifelong fan of the sport, but I honestly wouldn't be able to describe what ASU's previous set looked like, besides the helmet of course, without Googling it.

Then you're not much of a lifelong fan... Gold pants, red jerseys with gold trim, great lid (and while we're on the subject, I love your taste in basketball uniforms, but I have no idea where your taste in college football unis comes from. All over the map and all, pretty much, disagreeable).

I don't mind the new helmet logo, Sparty didn't do much for me, but ASU should have one helmet (gold with a maroon facemask and an inch maroon stripe down the middle, logo: up for grabs), two jerseys (maroon with gold trim, white with maroon trim) and two pears of pants (gold with single maroon stripe, maroon with single gold stripe).

I like them, especially the jerseys. Wouldn't mind those jerseys becoming UVAs full time uniforms.

Why you make fun of me? I make concept for Auburn champions and you make fun of me. I cry tears.
Chopping off the dicks of Filipino boys and embracing causes that promote bigotry =/= strong moral character.

FCS team Sam Houston State is yet another team who was given too much freedom with Nike's uniform bulder. Look at those pants:

lol, it looks like what would happen if 90s football design had a kid with 00s football design. Said that to say that it looks horrible.

This is what ASU previously wore.

I like it IMO. The piping wroks great, because it matches everywhere. It was modern without being extreme. I have no problem with the new unis, except that there's certain places where there should be yellow outlines.

numbers do not look good with those grey pants.

white/white/maroon

Beautiful.

speaking of teams losing their identities...

They fall under a different category. Sparky is still there, maroon and gold are still dominant and they didn't add ridiculous stripes that don't make sense. Even though the pitch fork takes over you still know they're ASU. I look at GT and I see a high school team..

I like the current ASU uniforms just the only thing IMO would make it even better would take the ASU from the sleeves. Put the ASU under the collar and add sparky back to both sleeves. Don't mess with the helmets.

No, the maroon outline on the helmet logo is definitely necessary. The gold wouldn't stand out as well against the white background without the outline.

I disagree. Looks nice here. In addition, yellow is just embellishment since it's not necessary to read the form (see logo on shoulder or numerals).

Those are beautiful, I literally wouldn't change a thing about them. A modernized version would make a great new look for UVA.

For a modernized look I would lose the gray face masks, other than that, these are beautiful.

I think what I was trying to say is yes, ASU did do a rebrand, but college football fans still know it's ASU IMO. Even with the addition of black, the pitchfork, and multiple helmets, Sparky is still featured pretty well in my opinion. If you look at their field, you see the gold and maroon everywhere. You still get the "feel" that they are the Sun Devils, without going overboard. But with Georgia Tech, they tried to be clever and it didn't work out at all. Bubble wrap numbers, hideous striping, even with GT on the helmet I still had a difficult time picturing Georgia Tech.

The uniform is surprisingly excellent and I would love to see UVA to go to that direction in the future. Unlike you nuordr, the gray facemask keeps it traditional and feels more authentic than a colored facemask.

How is Sparky featured, though? The decal has been relegated to the back of the helmet and AFAIK, there's no Sparky logo on the field.

Rivalry is a marketig term. Nothing more. If Nike says a uniform is part of the Pro Combat Rivlary series, then it is. If Nike doesn't, then it isn't.

While true, there are certain characteristics that are shared between the uniforms in the Rivalry Series as opposed to those that are not, and it's a decent way to figure out which category something most likely falls in since there is sometimes a dearth of official information on the designations.

When will you guys understand the point behind this jersey? Obviously it's not a "HEY LOOK, WE'RE IOWA AND WE HAVE A NEW LOOK!". It's clearly inspired by a uniform worn in an era where style, flash, and probably even helmets were not used. You guys have got to realize that the purpose of a true throw back look is using basic modern material, and aesthetically matching an era. C'mon, this is principals of design. Whether a throwback inspired uniform, or simple a faux throwback, the execution is spot on.

The lack of manufacturer's logos, and "flywire" and gaudy details here and there DOES NOT make a uniform "blah". It makes the uniform serve it's intended purpose.

I completely understand what a throwback uniform is supposed to represent, but if your going to do it, at least make it look good. Compare this Iowa picture to the 2012 Redskins throwback and you will see that they both represent the past, but only the Redskins uniform is amazing to view because the colors flow well throughout the entire uniform.

I think the color usage here is quite unique, and I really like the style of those numerals. Don't know what the helmet looks like, but this is a very crisp uniform.

Those would look great if the wings were Yellow instead of chrome. I used to get excited about Oregon Football uniforms, but now they just look like clowns with these helmets.

Yeah, because they looked so classy in a "lightning" helmet with ghost flames.

Well said.

I couldn't agree more...they combine a vibrant, bright green helmet with a drab green jersey and gray pants...zero cohesion from top to bottom.

That's the weakness in these. There are so many specialty finishes. I guess mashing all that together actually fits youth culture at the moment, but I'd prefer taking one of the specialty finishes and using it throughout the uniform. My favorite is the chameleon finish on the numerals, but I also like the green chrome on the helmet design.

I just think this is a mindless way of looking at it. I think history has shown us that there's a lot of successful imagery that fits the mold of Sparky. Look at military units, fighter squadrons, motorcycle gangs, etc. It's not the same brand of 'badass' that we see from Nike, for example, but it's still great, strong imagery nonetheless.

ASU_lockup_H2d_F.jpg

Definitely agree here. The extra maroon outline is just clutter. It might look great when you're holding the helmet in your hands, but at viewing distance, it adds unnecessary thickness to the logo, which decreases the read of the form, and it actually squeezes the gold, making it look nearly absent.

I still don't have a website, but I have a dribbble now! http://dribbble.com/andyharry

FWIW, the new pitchfork logo is EVERYWHERE on campus here, and I see more people wearing the new logo than I see people wearing the sparky logo. The Sparky logo is cool, but it works better as an alternate IMO.

Replace the old-school logo with the current sword V logo and you have a look for he ages. Also have a blue helmet option.

Agreed. I love everything about these uniforms. The only bad thing is the grey face masks.
