New JCPenney Logo

I don't like the complete drop of the entire text. I also think there is a pretty significant issue in the weight of the logo. All the relevant design is heavily based in the upper left hand corner. And I have to wonder, is the goal here to give off some sort of American vibe?

The PR speaks of being "America's favorite store", and I'm pretty sure I read the passing resemblance to the America flag was intentional, along with the red square being a nod to previous logos.

Wow they JUST changed their logo little less than 1 year ago (feb 2011)

I just passed by one that was an outlet that is becoming a regular jcpenney and it has the current logo on it, funny to think thats gonna be outdated already.

I dont care for the new logo, especially since it doesn't even say the full name of the store (seriously does ANYONE say they are goin to JCP?)

I think most people I know just say they are going to "Penny's" and honestly the only reason I go in there is because it's usually the anchor of the mall with the empty parking lot haha

Bad. Anyone could've made this. I wonder how much it cost, for all the research and professional design consultants and image specialists, etc, before this was finally what they went with.

Weak.

+1.

The logo is a last effort to survive.

This is a retail brand which is about to die, period. I am closer to 40 than 30 yet I have not bought a d@mn thing from Pennys in over 15 years. Bringing in Ron Johnson from Apple is not really going to help since it $hit has 30 years of down as a retail company. The last time the made $$$ was when they owned Eckerd Drugs.

They can change the logo like Sears, but the biggest reasons why both lost out in the early 1980's on middle America was that both refused to take MasterCard and VISA, but only their own credit. No true credit meant that people took their bank based cards elsewhere and they lost out to designer brands in the process.

that has little to do with anything. the only question that really matters is "does it accomplish what JCP was after?". i think the answer is yes. its not a stunning piece of work, but i think its a clever enough mark to communicate what they want. as lame of a descriptive as "frame the things you love" and "fair and square" might be, the solution to that brief is pretty nice. i do wish the colors were less saturated and they had gone with a more suiting typeface though. a tall swiss sans serif would fit nicely

just having the JCP within a blue square would be a terrible idea. anyone heard of the Gap?

I agree what without the Red Square they'd have issues distinguishing themselves from GAP. The problem that I see is that I don't know how this is going to be incorporated on things like signage and whatnot. Like on the front the stores are they really going to use the full logo which if the space given is lets say an 5'X5' area the actual message of the design will only be about 1.5 sq. feet, with the rest being the giant red square...Plus the balance is off pretty badly.

I say Downgrade.

It definitely fits in with the direction the store wants to go, emphasizing more American products.

But if I'm thinking "American department store" i'd probably think Sears more than JCPenney.

And to me, the lower case Helvetica logo makes it appear more "upscale" with the likes of Macy's and Nordstrom more than the rebrand.

Heh, so recent that I thought this one was the new one:

I'm not sure the stores near me have even switched to that one yet.
