2012 MLB Season

I understand that they need to protect their cable providers, but they ought to do their homework and make sure a channel is actually there to be blacked out before they black it out. That the entire state of Iowa has full cable access to the Cubs, White Sox, Brewers, Twins, Royals, and Cardinals is dubious, at best.

Except they don't, because there's nothing that says their various cable providers have to carry five RSNs, but there is something that says their Extra Innings package can't. Iowa is getting dicked. I doubt Council Bluffs has Fox Sports North/Wisconsin, for example. If you're a Brewers fan living there, you're SOL.

Pretty late getting around to this, but last week I was watching MLB Network and the Twins came up during one of the post-game highlight shows. It was suggested that the Twins should possibly explore trading....Joe Mauer. Have to admit, I was floored to hear it. Has that sort of talk been going around elsewhere? This was the first I'd ever heard of it.

Now, I haven't followed baseball as much as I usually do this year so I'm not sure I should deem the idea as either good or bad quite yet, but I do know Mauer's been struggling to stay on the field it seems. Would that be why that idea's even remotely floating around? He's hitting .298 at the present, which while not Mauer-esque, is still solid.

Like I said, the talk kind of floored me and I don't know how much of it has been going around if any, so it may not even be something to take that seriously.

EDIT: Besides that, who could even take his contract?

Mauer is pretty untradable with that contract.

Sure, there are always teams that take on bad contracts (see: The White Sox with Rios, the Angels with Wells), but he's owed $161M over the next 7 years.

The Twins won't eat enough to make it worthwhile, and no other team would take a seven year commitment on an oft-injured future DH.

And this is why JP Ricciardi doesn't have a job.

I think you could find a taker for Mauer if needed but why would the Twins trade him?

If they were way over what they could afford to pay him or he was just being unproductive I could see it but the Twins team salary for this year is about $100 million which I would say is in the range of what they can afford and he's second on the team in OPS so he has been productive. He's also by far the most marketable guy they have on the team and is probably a big reason why they are still drawing fairly well despite their record.

Dumping salary is really the only reason I can come up for why to do it and I'm not sure doing that will make the Twins that much better of a team either in the short or long term.

Quick MLB.com question:

As a resident in the Phoenix area, why are the MLB Free Game of the Day webcasts featuring the Diamonbacks have the television broadcasts blackout?

Because even though they're free, they still have to follow the broadcasting rules. I subscribe to the premium service and still can't get Giants or A's games despite being over 200 miles away from either team.

The toughest games for me to get used to be Yankee games, because I had the Extra Innings package on Dish Network and Dish didn't carry YES. Only time I could get Yankee games was when they were on Fox, local TV, the ESPN Sunday night game or playing the Mets.

I forget - wasn't there some spat between one of the cable providers in the NY area (Cablevision?) around October 2010? Resulted in NLCS blackouts and could've been a problem if the Yankees made it to the World Series. All in all, that sounds like a friggen joke.

Also, I know someone in Tallahassee who can't watch the Rays there despite being over 250 miles away from Tropicana Field. Yet I can watch the Marlins and I'm only about 250 miles away from Miami. Weird stuff.

Correct. Fox and Cablevision had a dispute that year and I wasn't able to watch the NLCS or the first 3 or 4 World Series games that year. And I also missed a Giants-Lions NFL game because of it.
