2012 MLB Season

Unless the Dodgers hits a major funk and the D-backs capitalize, Arizona will not repeat as NL West champs.

(Yes, I'm sometimes Captain Obvious.)

I wouldn't count the Giants out yet. Their hitting is somehow much improved, their defense has been more solid lately, and even with Lincecum looking absolutely abysmal their pitching staff is one of the best in baseball. If they can stay healthy and if Lincecum can salvage any of his previous form, they're gonna be pretty scary down the stretch.

I'd even argue that the Giants have one of the best pitching staffs in baseball

Lincecum (Needs so much work, but miracles can happen)

Cain (The true ace of this staff)

Vogelsong (He's been pitching out of his mind since he came to San Francisco and is showing that last year wasn't just a fluke)

Bumgarner (On just about any other team he'd be a #2 at worst)

Zito (still not worth near what he's making, but he's definitely having his best year as a Giant)

I wouldn't count either the Giants or the D'Backs out of the NL West.

I think the Dodgers are certainly a very good team but I'm not buying them as the hands down best team in the NL as their record would indicate they are to this point in the season so I definitely think they are going to come down to earth some at some point this year. They're getting alot of support from guys like Bobby Abreau, A.J. Ellis and Chris Capuano where I question how long they can keep their respective paces up for.

What they do have going for them is arguably the best player and pitcher in the NL (Matt Kemp and Clayton Kershaw), a young but solid bullpen and one of the best defensive units in baseball. They don't strike me as a team that gives away many games which I think is their biggest strength.

With the Giants the offense is better but they need Tim Lincecum in order to have any real shot in that division if they don't add any other pieces for the rest of the year. I think they've been very lucky up to this point that they have had no injury problems at all with that rotation. They've only used 6 different starting pitchers on the year and if you throw out Eric Hacker's one game appearance its five. That I think has been the key for San Francisco because they haven't asked much out of that bullpen and as a result I think they look alot better then they really are.

They may have to add a piece or two at the trade deadline to have a real shot because I don't think you can count on your starting five being healthy a full 162 games because somebody at some point in that rotation is going to go down. Its just a question of who and when. If I was the Giants I would be talking to the Angles about picking Kendry Morales or another player similar to him because I think they're biggest hole right now is at first base. I'm just not buying Brandon Belt as an everyday first baseman or at least not yet and this is kind of a win now team.

I for one, would LOVE to see the Giants get some kind of dirt on the Rangers and blackmail them fore Mitch Moreland. The way he hits against the Giants and with his power to right field he's perfect for us! :P

Meh, I see the Sox going around 91-71 at best.

As long as Alfredo Aceves is our closer, that ain't happenin'.

The Sox finish .500 at best. This team stinks.

Is it possible to name all four of the Nats starters to the All Star Game? Because they all deserve it. Best rotation in baseball by a country mile, and none of them (except Strasburg) get any credit for it.

Honestly Zimmermann and Jackson don't deserve it. I mean they've been great for 3 and 4 starters, but they are both no where near the consistant level of Strasburg and Gio. They've had some pretty average games. And I think your second point is wrong also, I've heard Gio gettin plennnttyyy of love. Right now i'd say he's having a better season than Stras, and arguably the best in the NL period.

Jackson's ERA after tonight's game is 3.11, and JZ's is 2.91. I can't honestly call those "average" numbers. Both of them have mediocre W-L records, but that's more a product of the absence of run support (especially in JZ's case) than poor outings.

In a season like this one, where just about all of the big-name pitchers who are usually a lock for All-Star honors (Halladay, Lee, Lincecum, Josh Johnson, etc.) have down years, I think it's very possible.

Yeah but then there are people like Dickey and Lance Lynn who are having amazing years that will fill those voids. I love Zimm and Jackson, but I don't think they will make the ASG.

Cain and Vogelsong (at least one of them) are pretty deserving as well.

But you're right. This Nats rotation is flat out scary right now. Hopefully it lasts, but that's gonna be a tall order with the way the Nats want to limit Strasburg's innings due to his previous arm injury. I'd LOVE to see this Nats team make the playoffs this season, but they're playing out of their minds right now and are really young. They have nowhere to go but up IMO. They'll be a force for a good while I think.

I think that's one of those things where they're saying the right thing now, but when it comes down to it they'll stick with him. Kind of like Johan Santana the other day when he was going for that no-no. If you ever asked their coach before then I'm sure he'd say he would never let Santana go 140 pitches under any circumstance. I think if the Nats make the playoffs they will be forced to stick with Strasburg whether they want to or not; much like Collins was "forced" to stick with Santana that night. I can't imagine the Nats want to deal with the uproar of our growing fanbase if Stras isn't starting Game 1 of the playoffs.

If they are without a doubt stopping him at 160 innings or whatever it is, they need to adjust the rotation around August and allow him to miss some starts for a few months so he is there in October.
