Mets trying to get Dickey a no hitter

http://espn.go.com/n...-tampa-bay-rays

I don't know what they plan to get out of it because MLB has a pretty strict policy of not overturning scoring calls and I would imagine the request is pretty much DOA but why not go for another no-hitter?

Actually, MLB can and has overturned official scoring decisions; teams routinely ask MLB to review scoring decisions.

But they won't here. Not only was it a tough play, but they won't retroactively give Dickey a no-hitter. And if they do, it should get an asterisk (unlike the Johan one) since Dickey pitched the rest of the game without the pressure of a no-hit bid.

The Cain perfect game is special even by perfect game standards.

I didn't see him getting called third strikes that were four inches off the plate like Halladay got, he's not some journeymen pitcher like Phil Humber who just happened to have the stars aligned, he was very dominating on the mound and I think would have had the stuff to pitch a perfect game no matter who he had faced and we got two highlight plays in the field out of it as well.

Idk if I would call this the best perfect game ever, it was against the worst team in the history of the world

Well, one of the most dominating perfect games I've ever seen (after the fact, of course) was Randy Johnson's perfect game. He threw 117 pitches and had 13 Ks. Cain tossed 125 pitches but had 14 K's, which ties Koufax's record. Either way, it's freaking awesome to see. And here's the best part to me. This is the very first perfect game in Giants franchise history. With all the great pitchers they've had in more than a century, Cain is the ONLY Giant to ever pitch a perfect game. So happy the Giants had the sense to lock this guy up long term.

Harold Reynolds just wrapped up my feelings on the Mets appeal pretty perfectly.

First off, that was a hit, not an error. David Wright has no chance if he gloves the ball, and you can't give a guy an error for not coming up with a barehand play. That's a hit all the way. Unfortunate for Dickey, but true.

Secondly, if the Mets are gonna appeal that, the Cardinals ought to appeal the Santana no-hitter because in truth, that was obviously a fair ball, he threw a one-hitter.

Now, Harold didn't say this, but the truth is that the rules allow a scoring decision to be overturned, not an umpires. So the second point isn't valid. But I think the real point is that this review is absurd. No way it should be overturned. Would Dickey even want a no-hitter in that manner?

Screw the stats. Best perfect game of all time, Don Larsen in 1956 against the Brooklyn Dodgers IN THE WORLD SERIES. Done.

Well that's why I think the appeal is DOA. Your opening up Pandora's box if you do so.

I'm not going to blame the Mets for trying though. You can appeal anything really. Doesn't mean your going to get anything out of it but you can try.

Sounds mildly bitter (even if it isn't) considering that, right around the same time that Cain finished his perfect game, Erick Aybar (!) hit a go-ahead home run in the 9th inning against the hated Dodgers.

And Erick Aybar hitting a home run might just be a rarer occurrence than a perfect game.

"Hated" might be a bit much regarding Angels/Dodgers. Always like to beat them just for local bragging rights, but there isn't any constant or direct competition to really form a hatred for them. I personally don't like the Dodgers because I was raised on baseball by my grandfather who grew up in New York as a Giants fan. Hated the Dodgers/Yankees, Hated the Giants for leaving, he moved to Orange County in 1979 and now we're Angel fans.

BUT I did enjoy the win. Two of the smallest Angels (Callaspo and Aybar) were the two biggest tonight, with a home run for each. Won the game, won the series. The Angels loooooooooove interleague and I believe they've won something like 15 of the last 18 against the Dodgers.

You know, as a committed sports fan, you go through a lot of BS that can make you question at times why you care so much. These last three seasons of Giants baseball has shown me why it's all worth it. I am SO proud of this team, and feel so blessed that I've got to see so many cool moments lately. And for it to happen to Matt Cain, probably the most underrated starter in baseball and the longest tenured Giant, makes it even more special.

I can't even imagine how Boston area sorts fans must feel!

Dude get over it, the umps missed a call that can not be changed. A scoring decision can be changed will it should it are two different things, but the Mets can not be blamed for trying. I obviously am rooting for a change, but I agree its unlikely.

Edit: Redundant

However, it should not be overturned. It was Upton running, not an easy play, and that "1" was already under "H" after one inning. I don't have a problem with appealing, what's the harm? But it won't be changed.

As a Giants fan I have witnessed a lot of Baseball history. But out of all of them, besides the 2010 World Series, it was this perfect game I enjoyed the most. Matt Cain had been my favorite Giant since he was called up. He has had the worst luck of any Giants pitcher. Cain would pitch 7 soild, give up 1 run and get the lose. If anyone on the Giants deserved it, it was him.

So at this point I think at this point R.A. Dickey deserves the start in the ASG, but I wonder if Cain will get any more consideration due to tonight. He's had another solid year and is far and away the best pitcher on a very good staff. It'll be interesting to see how these two pitch from here till the All Star break.

Honestly, I feel extremely grateful that I've gotten to see all four of my home/favorite teams win at least one championship in my lifetime. Spoiled for sure, but extremely appreciative.

Stephen Strasburg might have something to say about that decision too.
