Super Bowl Stats

Bad luck for the Pats? In Super Bowl history, teams wearing white jerseys have won 27 times..teams in dark jerseys only 18. And, teams that wear a blue jersey during the big game (navy, royal or whatever you call the Seahawks' color) are only 5 and 11.

Getting a result of 27 'heads' results in 45 coin flips, would not be considered statistically significant. Indeed the cumulative probability of tossing a coin and getting 27 or more heads in 45 coin tosses is 11.6%. So 1 in 9. But presumably you would be equally impressed if you tossed 27 tails. So we can double the probability and we get a likelihood of between a fifth and a quarter that either heads or tails pops up 27 times. If you had the same 60% propensity for teams wearing white to win by the time we get to Super Bowl CC (200), then that would be far more unlikely to have occurred than with 47 Super Bowls. If I have explained it poorly, you might want to look up statistical significance and the idea of a 'p-value'.

Sports casting tends to be particularly guilty of making the logical fallacy; 'post hoc ergo propter hoc' ('after the fact, therefore because of the fact'). Finding trends that roughly match other trends and presuming that they somehow relate to each other. ie confusing correlation with causation.

Here's a fact for you. I have watched every Super Bowl since the first Bills/ Cowboys superbowl in the 90's (about 18 or so) and Ive only picked about 4 winners. I pick the Pats over the Giants for the weekend.

Here's your more important stat: Eight of the 11 teams to lose a Super Bowl wearing blue have gone off as Vegas underdogs. The three exceptions are the Colts in SB III, the Pats in SB XLII, and the Colts in SB XLIV.

Baltimore (III) -18

Dallas (V) +2 1/2

Buffalo (XXVI) +7

Buffalo (XXVII) +6 1/2

Buffalo (XXVIII) +10 1/2

Tennessee (XXXIV) +7

New York (XXXV) +3

Seattle (XL) +4

Chicago (XLI) +7

New England (XLII) -12

Indianapolis (XLIV) -5

So away teams improve to 26-20, teams wearing white improve to 28-18 and teams wearing blue fall to 5-12.

Pats are now a pedestrian 2-2 in blue unis.

As a Lions fan, I only wish my team was a "pedestrian" 2-2 wearing blue uniforms in the Super Bowl.

oh ,my god ,i strong recommend you to have a visit on the website ,or if i'm the president ,i would have an barceque with the anthor of the articel .
