Lance still accomplished a lot...beating cancer and competing in the Tour De France is impressive. One would assume that without the drugs he'd still have competed very well, but not been the winner. It's still amazing. Nevertheless, his image takes a hit and deservedly so. He sounds like a complete jackass. A great athlete who overcame a lot, but a jackass nonetheless. And this pedestal we have him on has to crumble, regardless of how many others were doing it.

I would generally agree with this, but with the possibility that what Armstrong was doing to his body led to him getting cancer makes me a bit more wary to go with that theme at this point.

This is an interesting story

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/report-did-nike-pay-dollar-500000-to-verbruggen-to-cover-up-armstrong-positive

It's clear in my view that the UCI were pretty corrupt in being complicit in allowing Armstrong to get away with doping, so this story has something of a ring of truth about the story. It's also clear that the UCI was keen for Armstrong to be a face for the sport in order to attract American money.

Would as many people have doped though if you didn't have the already top athletes doping and thus making them that much better?

While you may have had the 30 HR per year hitter not dope if the top guys were hitting a "natural" 50 HR per year, the moment they entered the 60s and 70s, that 30 HR per year hitter was then forced to dope to keep fulfilling his role in baseball.

So lemme get this straight... Nike is letting go of Lance for doping. Yet, they have stood by Joe Paterno, even after his death??

Well not entirely

Although Phil Knight's comments still come across as a little creepy.

Yeah, when Nike decides that you're too sleazy to be associated with, that really says something.

I thought the same thing. Particularly since it's not like they're abandoning Livestrong or anything like that. They just don't want anything to do with Lance. And this is the company that has stood by sleeze like Joe Paterno and Tiger Woods.

Lance received the same treatment in Beaverton as Paterno did.

For now, Tiger's issues outside of sport (infidelity and divorce) are civil matters, not criminal. Plus, the Nike Board of Directors easily knows that Nike Golf as a brand and its $623+M in golf revenue would be gone. They could not get that much revenue from their other golfers like Michelle Wie, Paul Casey, Suzanne Petersen, Anthony Kim (or his shakes), Charl Schwartzel, and Stewart Cink. And there are three major winners there in those other Nike golfers under contract.

Bottom line with Lance is that Livestrong was is "second act" and it was done in the process of his first act.

Now that this is already done, he really does not have much of a forum to have a third one. Then again, he could use his wealth to produce a documentary series, or have a one-man show like Mike Tyson. But that is all he has left if he wants to still be a public figure.

Tiger Woods should not be compared to that piece of :censored:, Joe Paterno.

Agreed.

Woods might be a lousy husband, but so far as I know he never repeatedly helped anyone rape kids.

You're right of course. But I still say he's scum worthy of immediate dumping by Nike, as I take a very dim view of adulterers. Particularly ones who screw 90+ women when they're married to a bombshell Swedish model.

Just as a post script on Lance Armstrong, the UCI has accepted USADA's report, and Armstrong has therefore been stripped of his titles. A decision on Friday about what to do with Armstrong's TdeF titles. It's likely they will remain vacant.

Probably for the best. I was reading somewhere that one year's would have to go back to 17th place to find a rider not convicted at some point of being a doping cheat. Which pretty much says it all about how bad the drug problem in cycling really has become.

So in short Lance wasn't cheating, he was just leveling the playing field.

End the race. The whole sport is crooked.
