Charleston Cannons

A buddy has a project for school, where he has to create a semi-pro basketball team, and do a write up as to how it'll affect the local economy (its a 400 level course here at the University of Cincinnati).

Regardless, he's almost done, but needed an identity for his team.

He came to me with the name Charleston (SC) Cannons. I wanted patriotic colors, and wanted to get a b-ball somewhere in the design. Because of the "patriotic" theme, I went with an ABA style ball.

Let me know what you think:

I'm not sure how to take that... :D

From everything I've read, most people think that the ABA logos are horrendous.

No no! Yours is good, I meant that it is like the ABA logos in the sense that it is simple. I like it.

bump...

I know its pretty basic/simple, but I'd like to get some more opinions before this thread disappears into obscurity.

I'm just now finally comfortable with Illustrator, and I'm trying to improve my skills as much as possible. Any advice would be appreciated.

The first thing that comes to my mind when I see this logo is that the cannon itself looks weak!

Any suggestions to add depth (aggressiveness?)?

This is the kind of feedback I'm looking for - as I'm sure is the case with many of you guys, everything I can do in Illustrator is self taught so I'm constantly trying to improve myself.

Well I think the "cannon stand" needs some depth. Add a little detail! I take it that it's a wooden stand, right? If so then ad some grain lines and a little shadowing. Do the same to the wheel as well. I think your wordmark is great as it is but try to make the "basketball lines" a little more prominent.

I think you're almost there. You need to adjust the angle of the gun, as well as thicken the barrel. The carriage also needs to have a second leg added (the legs attached to both sides of the rifle barrel, and then met at the bottom, sort of like a Y). I've attached some graphics to give you a frame of reference.
