Gridiron League of America

As of a few days ago I began working on an idea that popped in my head. I started thinking about how the USFL had a great business model in place, as well as loyal fan bases (in most cities). Arguably, you could say that Donald Trump and his desire to push the league leaders into expansion and direct competition with the NFL screwed them over. But, if Donald Trump didn't get in the way, the USFL could have been a premiere Spring football league for years to come. Whether or not it would have survived the long haul is another issue. Decades following leagues have tried to compete or not compete with the NFL (XFL, UFL, WFL) and were not quite as successful. In my opinion, with sound investors, great markets for football, and good fan bases, Spring football could flourish once again.

So, with this project, I wanted to create a "fictional" Spring football league. I came up with cities that felt like logical choices for clubs and went with a small amount of teams seeing as how most leagues starting off the ground would want to go small to see if there is true interest. But, I feel there would be enough geographical distance between each market to where it could work and give decently close rivals to every city. Below is a map to my list of cities:

Also, I have listed several names below to select from, as well as an "other" option for people to suggest names. Over the next few weeks I will be designing club emblems and uniforms to the desired nicknames chosen and will hopefully have a wonderful product by the time it is finished.

In one of the fantasy leagues here a few years ago, I had a team based in Boise called the Idaho Cutthroats--after the state fish--the cutthroat, a type of trout.

So I'd like to see what you could do with that based on what I came up with for it...

Comic Sans walks into a bar, and the bartender says, "Sorry, we don't serve your type here."

As a Milwaukeean, I can promise that the only folks who'd buy even a dimes worth of Wild Hogs merch are hipsters who want to be ironic. If you must go with a Harley theme, Outlaws, Riders and Thunder are all better options.

Idaho Reapers (cross a farm theme with a Grim Reaper)

Utah Swarm (Beehive State)

Los Angeles Bulldogs (a reference to the undefeated 1937 team)

Omaha Pioneers

Birmingham Vulcans

San Antonio Riders

Milwaukee Creamers

Louisville Colonels

NY/NJ ???

Hampton Roads Lions*

*for the Norfolk team. The main purpose of the suggestion is to use Hampton Roads instead of Norfolk or Virginia.

I strongly disagree with your placement of a team in NY/NJ. I think Hartford, Connecticut would be better. I don't like any of the names listed anyway for the NY/NJ team: a couple are too similar to Northeast MLS teams.

i thought about both your suggestions for Hampton Roads and NY/NJ-Hartford. But, I went against the Hampton Roads idea because I think it would be better to represent either the city or the state. And as far as Hartford, I don't think it would be a "big" enough market.

If Boise is big enough, then Hartford would be big enough. Connecticut has a very dense population compared to anyplace in Idaho, but I have no issue with a NY/NJ team.

Hate the name Wild Hogs for Milwaukee. Riders, Outlaws, even Iron works better.
