A's in 1989

Patriots in 2002, 04 and 05

Earthquakes in 2001 and 2003

That's it among my teams in the 5 main American leagues/conferences. Sadly the Sharks, Kings and Padres haven't won one in my lifetime, and the Sharks and Pads have never won it all. My minor league and foreign teams however have been far more productive.

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

Winnipeg is not a good place to live in terms of sports championships.

In hockey, the Jets won the very last WHA Avco Cup a couple of days after I was born, on May 20, 1979. The Jets, then Moose, then Jets again have failed to win anything else since then, although the Moose did make it to the AHL Calder Cup finals in 2009 so at least there was a glimmer of hope for an all too brief while.

In football, the Blue Bombers won the Grey Cup in 1984, 1988 and 1990. Nothing at all since then, which is pretty remarkable when you consider that the CFL has only had between 8 and 13 teams a season for all those intervening years. Grey Cup losses in 1992, 1993, 2001, 2007 and 2011 did nothing to ease the pain.

Besides the Bombers and Jets there are some other clubs that have graced our city and even won a title or two, although only the hard-core sports fans would have paid much attention.

In baseball, the independent AA Goldeyes won the league championship in their first season back in 1994, but nothing since then despite being one of the best run, best supported teams in independent baseball.

The two minor-league basketball franchises, the Thunder and the Cyclone, failed to win championships and even if they had, I don't know that many people would have noticed.

The city's old team, the Fury, won the CSL championship in 1992 but by that point the bottom was falling out of the league and it didn't really register on the sports radar (although it would have a few years prior to that).

So yeah, Winnipeg is not exactly awash in sports glory. I have now been waiting 22 years to see one of our big two teams bring home the championship hardware.

I was born in 1995. Villa won a League Cup in 1996 and Youngstown State won 1-AA in 1997 - both before I can remember anything. The Crew won the MLS in 2009 before I paid any attention to soccer. PSG's won a few domestic cups, but those really don't mean anything.

My life as a sports fan sucks.

For me it's

MLB-Marlins: 1997 & 2003

NFL-Steelers: 2006 & 2009

NHL-Penguins: 2009

NBA-Heat: 2006 & 2012

Yes, that is NCAA baseball up there.

Now I can add the Heat for a second time.
