Obscure/Unknown Sports

I figured this would go better here than the lounge.

Earlier tonight I was looking at a list of national sports and came across a sport called Kabaddi. After reading the rules I was pretty confused, and after watching a YouTube video on it, I'm even more confused. I kind of pride myself on my sports knowledge, but I have NO IDEA what's going on here. Basically, it seems like a big game of tag and hold your breath.

Kabaddi explained

Can anyone explain this to me? I don't really get it ^_^

And when I say obscure or unknown, I mean from a western perspective. I also don't really mean these crazy obscure sports like taser soccer or anything (but if you want to include them, feel free), I mean sports that are actually really popular or national sports.

Anyone else got any more?

I've heard of Kabaddi for a while, but, still can't figure out what's going on. Another one that had intrigued me in the past: Sepak takraw. It's like volleyball, but WITHOUT using any part of your arm.

I saw, I came, I left.

Whatever it is, it will probably be on ESPN 8, "The Ocho". :P

No because when the Irish came to Ireland and first came in contact with the leprechaun people, they didn't take their land away and force them to move west. Instead, the two groups learned to assimilate peacefully. However, certain tribes of the leprechaun refused to taint the pure blood and moved north into the forests of Ireland, only to be seen rarely, usually at the same time of a rainbows appearance and occasionally at the factories of Lucky Charms.

Well I guess Cricket counts here.

It's probably the 2nd or 3rd most popular sport in the World but outside of the commonwealth and subcontinent, nobody seems to know anything about it.

It's actually a very interesting sport to follow if you like the tactics and statistics of baseball. When people from North America think of cricket they usually only know it lasts forever. They're right about international test matches which CAN last 5 days. There are also 2 one day versions. One Day Internationals which last about 7 hours or so and T20 matches which last 3 hours.

There's actually a T20 world cup this year. Canada starts it's qualifying run next week in the UAE.

Yeah, I prefer watching sports that have defined period limits, so at least I have some reasonable idea when it will end.

Kabaddi looks like some combination of wrestling, red rover, and tag to me.

Pesapallo is awesome. Some videos of pro Pesapallo on youtube.

Some other sports to consider:

Netball - It's huge in the British Commonwealth countries. It was originally called "women's basketball" and the game was eventually adapted into its current form.

Korfball is a similar sport in the Netherlands

Sepak Takraw is foot volleyball. It's huge in SE Asia.

NCFA-FCS/CBB: Minnesota A&M | RANZBA (OOTP): Auckland Warriors | USA: Front Range United | IFA: Toverit Helsinki | FOBL: Kentucky Juggernaut

Minnesota A&M 2012 National Champions 2013 National Finalist, 2014 National Semi-finals 2012, 2013, 2014 Big 4 Conference Champions

i saw sepaktakraw on espn 2 a few weeks ago. The skill required to play the game amazed me. Seriously, playing volleyball with your feet! Would Australian Football count here?

Wow, the only one of those that I've heard of is Netball- And that's because they mention it in a Flight of the Conchords song.

Yes, I root for teams all over the place. And I apparently favor birds.

I actually used to have a pretty good friend I worked with last winter who was on the Australian national team for Netball. She played basketball for a season at a junior college here and said that she just couldn't get pick up the rule differences so she only played one season. She was a helluva good shooter though.

not surprising, try playing basketball without a backboard and your shots'd get better too!
