Racing Stripes on MLB Jerseys

Recommended Posts

Nah, the Mets finally fixed their uniforms. No more tinkering.

Agreed, except for that hideous road alt.

The Seattle Mariners' 1981-1986 uniforms had racing stripes. It's too bad baseball is the only sport where fans can't regularly enjoy stripes. Let's hope that changes in the future.

I still think this would be a great look to bring back, would be unique too.

Maybe minus the pinstripes. The road uni is gorgeous, but the homes are way too busy.

I know I'm in the minority, but I still think that this is the Mets best look. Bring it back as a button front and own the racing stripes look.

Pullover jerseys are better. The Mets wore button-front jerseys with racing stripes in 1991 and 1992 and they paled in comparison to the previous years versions.

I wouldn't say they're that bad:

They arent coming back, neither are pull overs, stop posting about them

And you have proof of this?

Lack of any single full time pullover uniform since the last one was retired?

Didn't the Rays have a 1979 fake throwback pullover?

A one time alternate.

Was a nice look, but they were a little late to the party. Sad that it lasted only one year.

I enjoy stripes every time I watch a game...

So yes, they did come back. Even if for one-time appearances.

I'm not sure you can point to a one time novelty and say pullovers are coming back.

Pullovers look cheap. They're what kids wear for little league. Not what teams playing at the highest level of competition should be wearing.

I feel that's only because baseball uniforms have traditionally been button-up. Had players been wearing pullovers from the start, it would be the button-ups that feel out of place.

I personally enjoy racing stripes, I think a few teams could pull them off as at least an alternate. I don't want them to be mainstream, but it'd be refreshing to pop up every so often.

Now had they introduced those unis 5 years earlier, they'd definitely more known.

Here's a better picture of Dave Henderson in the original Mariners racing stripes:

^ Those are odd in that the striping doesn't go along the sides of the jersey.

BTW, I actually own the 1983-90 Mets home jersey. :) I personally think it looks nice on me, and speedy, if ya get my drift. :D

I prefer it that way. I think it makes the stipes look cleaner.

Yeah, depends on the type of stripe. If complicated, then definitely just the sleeve. If simple, then the side is fine. I think that the Mets would have looked better without it on the side. I thought the Phillies looked OK with it on the side.
