NFL considers suspending Pro Bowl

I just don't care if they keep the game or not.

I've watched the game for maybe 30 minutes in the last ten years combined. Football just can't be played at less then 100% effort and still look good. But people still watch this game so I don't know how against it I can really be. There's alot of things I would need to get through in terms of things that I think should be taken off the air before getting to the Pro Bowl.

I just don't watch the game. I don't feel the need to complain about it anymore then that. It would be great if the game was played at 100% but your only going to see that in Madden. Guys are not going to risk injury over an exhibition game.

Every all star game sucks to me really except the MLS all star game, and that's because they play a European team in a league pride type deal. The NHL did that for their challenge series or whatever it was called against the soviets. I think that was much more compelling than seeing stars half ass it and scoring ridiculous amounts of points.

Bye Pro Bowl. Nobody cares

Frankly, this just seems like another unnecessarily stupid move by Goodell. The Pro Bowl does way more good than harm. Who cares if it's a really casual atmosphere? That's how All Star Games are supposed to be. It does so much good for the Hawiian economy, is still the highest rated program on TV that weekend, and is a nice way to end a long, grueling, and extremely serious season. I was behind Goodell 100% for a long time, but the way he shoves his nose into things and unnecessarily makes changes to things that aren't broken really has soured me on the guy. The Pro Bowl isn't hurting anyone, leave it alone and let it be. It's not a perfect fit for TV, but the Pro Bowl experience (for those who are ever lucky enough to actually go to one) is a really unbeatable experience.

And for those who are suggesting that the Pro Bowl have more meaning, I ask why? Look how much that hurt the MLB All Star Game.

My thoughts exactly. Hasn't El Comisionado recognized the hand he had in destroying what interest there was in the Pro Bowl? Did anyone really expect that more people would tune in to the Pro Bowl if it was played before the Super Bowl? Going off of what you said, Bucfan56, concerning the Hawaii-trip thing, having the Pro Bowl after the Super Bowl ends an otherwises grueling, serious season nicely while giving fans one last NFL game before the offseason. It's too bad Roger had to futz around with the timing, because whatever the problem is, the timing isn't it.

However, I'll put on my tinfoil hat and say that there's the off chance that nixing the Pro Bowl was part of the league's plan all along. If any organization can plan things out so subtlety, the NFL can.

There's a Pro Bowl game?
Pretty much. I hope they wise up and just do a Hawaii skills challenge and let the players enjoy their reward without some hokey bullcrap game. The NHL skills challenge is a fine example of how it can be done right and be an amazing time.

That is smart, but the problem is what skills can there be for something like this? An offensive lineman race?

Apparently the skills challenge still happens but isn't televised. Among the events are a 40-yard dash, throwing for accuracy, kicking for distance, catching, and bench press. Obviously I'd prefer if they made some goofy contests to spice it up, ala kickers trying to hit the 3 parts of the crossbar, have QB's aim for trash cans at different intervals and other accuracy events, do a WR pass gauntlet, maybe even do a conference vs. conference relay race.

Considering how many times we hear that the NFL only cares about squeezing out as many domes as it can, I think they ought to be commended for saying "We don't care about the ratings, or the ad revenue that generates. It's a lousy product, doesn't show our sport in its best light, and we don't want to put it out there any more."

To quote Dr Sheldon Cooper 'Mahalo for nothing Hawaii'.

It seems kind of pointless to me to pick pro bowl teams, and do nothing with them. I still think making the next seasons Hall of Fame game the pro bowl would be an interesting move, though not without it's problems. I also quite like the idea of a skills event, possible with the pro bowl as a flag football game thrown in there.

I know that you go to the Pro Bowl every year, but you are literally the only person I've ever known who cares about it. Just find another excuse to take a vacation to Hawaii - it's not that hard.

You wouldn't be picking Pro Bowl teams, just making a list of All-Pro players. Just like it used to be.

We don't have an exhibition game with all of baseball's Gold Glovers.

Which is fair enough, but I tend to think if it's a relatively meaningless accolade which fans can't relate to, you'll get equivalent situations of Jeter being awarded a golden glove even though everyone knows he isn't the best fielder at his position.

Why would the process be any different than it is now?

Not that I'll be too sad about the Pro Bowl going away, but what's with the general dislike of All-Star games being played the way the are? They're exhibitions for a reason. It's a chance for the players to play a game in a relaxed manner and to put on a show for the fans in attendance and on TV. I want them to do things that I wouldn't ordinarily see in a regular season or playoff game. I want to see players trying trick shots, running trick plays, and standing in the wrong batter's box, etc.

A lot of you are looking at All-Star games the wrong way. They're exhibitions that are geared towards entertaining the younger fans. All-Star games are supposed to resemble video games and Harlem Globetrotter shows. There's still that sense of coolness about the game's best players and stars all being on the same field/court/ice at once. It's a chance for all the sport's stars....past and present and even future.....to all be in one city at once. I used to have a similar mindset about All-Star games, wishing they'd be a little more competitive. I worked many of the 2008 NHL All-Star festivities here, and getting that experience made me realize just how big these events are. It's fans coming from all over the country, continent, and the world all coming together to celebrate their love for their favorite sport.

The NFL should look into other options for the Pro Bowl. They had the right idea by bringing it back onto the mainland, but staging it onto Super Bowl Week a week before the Super Bowl may not be the best of options. Since many of the NFL's greats routinely show up to various events at the city of the Super Bowl anyway, why not play the Pro Bowl the night before the Super Bowl in the same host city, but at another venue? Just about every city that has/wants to host a Super Bowl has a nearby college stadium that has a decent amount of seats.

Hawaii would lose out on a little revenue (Who really goes to Hawaii just to go to the Pro Bowl and do nothing touristy?), but the Pro Bowl becomes eons more accessible to football fans in the various NFL markets.

Some sports lend themselves to casual exhibition games. Gridiron doesn't. When played at half-speed, it's rather silly.

I always wanted them to do some kind of flag football on the beach in Hawaii. Tshirts, no helmets. They could have had some fun with that, but make it backyard-casual.

Exactly. There's nothing good about full-contact football being played half speed. Doing that makes it a lot easier to get hurt and it's just not fun to watch. Hockey and basketball lend themselves well to playing half speed and putting on a Globetrotters type show. And baseball is just baseball. You can play full speed and it's not really a big deal.

They tried the flag football on the beach thing, and Robert Edwards tore up his knee so bad that the league canceled the beach party for good.

It does so much good for the Hawiian economy

Does it? Are Hawaiians really hard up for winter tourists these days and circle Pro Bowl weekend every year?
