NFL considers suspending Pro Bowl

Some sports lend themselves to casual exhibition games. Gridiron doesn't. When played at half-speed, it's rather silly.

I always wanted them to do some kind of flag football on the beach in Hawaii. Tshirts, no helmets. They could have had some fun with that, but make it backyard-casual.

Agreed 100%. Baseball, basketball, & hockey all-star games work because even at half-speed, those games are fun because the scores are crazy and you still get to see players do some amazing stuff on offense due to the lack of defense. Hell, if the game is close near the end, you get to see at least some sort of semblance of a competitive game. Hell, even MLS' all-star game works because like evanmaldonado said, you get to see one of the best teams in Europe play against the "best" that this league has to offer and it's sort of a pride deal. You don't get ANY of what I just mentioned with the Pro Bowl. All-star games are supposed to be half-assed exhibition contests, yes, but a half-assed exhibition contest does not work with football.

Honestly, everybody should've known that the Pro Bowl wouldn't be too much longer for this era when they moved the date around and even moved it out of Hawaii for a year or 2. If the players don't consider it a priority and the fans only watch it because the NFL could sponsor a game of horseshoes & still get crazy ratings, then it really shouldn't last anymore.

So yeah, definitely not gonna miss the Pro Bowl. Hopefully the league comes up with a better way to honor its stars, because the Pro Bowl's run its course.

It does so much good for the Hawiian economy

Does it? Are Hawaiians really hard up for winter tourists these days and circle Pro Bowl weekend every year?

Yes. It's a HUGE week for tourism right smack in the middle of the slow season.

I don't watch it much anymore. I really don't watch the NBA in general, but the Slam Dunk Contest used to be a good show for fans, but superstar players either don't want to be in the SD contest, fear of getting hurt or think they're not getting paid enough, or want to give the new guys a chance. Whatever the reason, it really has seemed more gimmicky than in the past, at least in my opinion.

As for the NFL if they want to suspend the game or get rid of it - fine by me. Not sure Hawaii is loving the idea though.

I also don't like the MLB All-Star Game deciding HF Advantage for the World Series - And I'm a St. Louis Cardinals fan. :)

  • 3 weeks later...

NFL.com just announced that the Pro Bowl will be moving back to Hawaii for 2013.

That also means that there is gonna be a Pro Bowl in 2013. Welp.

The only all star game I watch is baseball. Whether it's the home field advantage (I'm one of the few who likes that), or the fact that there's more of a distinction between the AL and the NL than any other major league's conferences, I personally buy into the idea that I have a side to really root for. That I care about the outcome. I find pride in the idea of the NL winning the game.

I'm not exactly sure how the MLB accomplished this. HFA certainly plays a role, but I sort of felt this way even before that, so I don't know. But whatever it is, I care. And the players seem to care a little more than the other sports. It's possible that, save for the most extreme plays (legging out an IF hit, diving after a catch, etc.) you're not really risking injury to any great extreme by playing baseball at a normal game speed. In the other sports, it's fair to suggest you are, especially football.

So there's probably some things that work naturally in the favor of the MLB ASG and naturally against the other sports. Whatever the case, MLB does it for me, the others really don't.
