2012 London Olympics Thread

Honestly, I prefer the Winter Olympics to the Summer ones. Not only because my favorite sport is hockey, but because I find myself able to watch just about every event that's on. I can't think of a Winter event that I don't watch, but there's plenty to skip in the Summer.

Exactly how I feel.

Thirded. The only time I remember watching something significant during Summer Olympics was the 1996 men's 100 m final.

The only events of the Summer Olympics I watch are the track & field sprint events (100, 200, 4x100 relay) and some basketball and some soccer.

The Winter Olympics however, I watch pretty much every discipline except for cross country skiing and figure skating.

The summer olympics are a tough sell for me. You either stay inside and watch a minimal amount of events at odd hours, or you go outside and enjoy it. The winter olympics, on the other hand, are VERY easy to get into. The weather is usually pretty cold, the hockey tournament is always fun to watch, and for the past two olympics I've had a few close friends compete in some of the skiing/snowboarding events.

I will watch some of the basketball events though. Only time I can truly say my favorite team is always favored to win :P

BTW, is anyone else absolutely stunned that it's summer olympic time again? It feels like Beijing was just here!

Since I didn't have a TV during the Beijing games, I was watching the events that were streamed online. Those were events that weren't on TV (so no swimming, track, and gymnastics). I spent a bit of time watching archery and loved it. You wouldn't think it's that exciting, and maybe it's not. But the announcer and crowd was so into it that it was fun to watch. Most of the time the archers would hit 9s (just outside the bullseye) and people would clap. But when they hit the bullseye the announcer would yell "TEN!" and the crowd would go nuts. So awesome.

"In the arena of logic, I fight unarmed."

I tweet & tumble.

Reminds me of watching darts on TV.

"One hundred and forty." (crowd murmurs)

"ONE HUNDRED AND EEEEEEEEEIIIIIIIIIIIIGHTY!!" (crowd goes bananas)

Wow still two moons to the game, it must have many roads to travel before the openning ceremonies.

The relay will be within 10 miles of 95% of the UK population. It's literally going just about everywhere.

Let's see...

45 year old Dara Torres failed to make her 6th Olympic swim team.

Double amputee Oscar Pistorius was named to the South Africa 400m relay team.

The transgender US Hammer Thrower Keelin Godsey falied to qualify for the Women's Hammer Team.

And of course we have the bizarre case of Jeneba Tarmoh, who refused to run-off for the final spot on the USA 100m team.

I always hate the summer Olympics. Too much focus on basketball, absolutely no coverage of the baseball, and a bunch of individual sports that I really don't care about. Call me when Sochi 2014 starts.

Complete opposite over here in Australia we get all swimming and track and field and practically nothing else besides the occasional men's field hockey

Given that Baseball is no longer an Olympic sport, there will literally be no baseball coverage this year!!

This year you've got pretty much no excuse to find some minoroty sports. Both the BBC in the UK, and NBC in the states are showing upto 24 HD channels of olympic coverage, I believe. In the UK, we usually get excited about sports British athletes are doing well in and ignore virtually everything else. Though this year it might well be different, what with being the hosts and all. Personally I am actually beginning to get very excited about it all. Torch relay passes through my hometown on Sunday, then there is only a couple of weeks to wait!!

So tomorrow we get to go back to swooning over Hope Solo and Alex Morgan? Can't wait!!

EDIT: the game's actually going on as we speak. USA down 2-0 in the 17th. At least the above named players are gorgeous

USA level at 2 through 35.

Watching a replay of the match on NBC Sports Network. 2nd half just started.

France came out smoking but have faded as the US women have gotten rolling.

Update: 3-2 USA at 55'. Just call her Carli "The Cannon" Lloyd.

Oh, and we've already had some controversy and wackiness in London 2012.

Elsewhere in women's soccer:

North Korea's women's soccer team refused to take the field for its first Olympics match after an enormous diplomatic faux pax saw the flag of South Korea displayed alongside the players' names on the scoreboard at Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland.

And a female Greek athlete has earned the dubious distinction of being the first to get tossed from an Olympic Games over an ill-advised tweet:

Greece's triple-jump champion was expelled from the Olympics after posting a tasteless tweet about Africans and the West Nile virus.

Hellenic Olympic Committee officials announced Voula Papachristou wouldn't travel to London after she tweeted a joke about African immigrants.
