FiddySicks
I understand how people feel about the railroad image about a ballpark for a team named for SPACE EXPLORATION..... but part of Minute Maid is built with an old train station and that part of downtown Houston does have an old timey, almost industrial look to it. Kinda hard not to think of trains. But hey, what ever the owner decides, it's alright with me. Just as long as the look isn't Godawful.they'll compromise and give us a space train!! Maybe they could team up with Disney and put one of these in On 11/19/2012 at 7:23 PM, oldschoolvikings said: She’s still half convinced “Chris Creamer” is a porn site.) Bouj
And I am sick of people complaining about the shorter distance to LF. It's app. the same as at Fenway, with the exception being the wall is a dozen ft shorter. It's an acceptable quirk. My team's acceptable quirk is your team's stupid gimmick, and vice versa.First of all, I hate Fenway park on the most basic level. That is to say, I don't know about the "experience" of the park, I'm ignoring the history of the park, and just saying that I think it's a poor venue for a game of baseball. The dimensions. The super high wall in left but the super short wall in right. I don't like it.BUT, so long as they keep the stadium in good shape (and I don't know if they have or not), I allow it (as if I matter). Fenway wasn't built with the knowledge that baseball would become the multi-million dollar industry that it is today. It was built because they could get the land and they could play ball there. The dimensions of the lot it was built on necessitated the short porch and high wall.Houston built their park in 2000. Baseball had been a huge industry for some time. Building stadiums was a big deal. There were not constraints (behind a little politicking) on where you could build a field. There was no reason not to chose a spot that had ample room for a full field. The Astros had their choice, and they chose to make it a little bandbox.THAT is why a stadium built in 2000 has gimmicks and one built in the early 1900s has unfortunate quirks. The downtown location was the spot they were able to build on. And the Astros wanted a downtown park, so they were tied to a certain amount of real estate to where they could build on if they wanted to build in downtown. The reason for the short distance is that they didn't want to knock down Union Station, which sits directly behind it. The short dimensions are completely valid because of the block size they had to fit it into in downtown Houston. If you want to get into the reasoning behind choosing that location, that's one thing. But the location/architecture necessitated the short LF distance. There is a reason Minute Maid & Toyota Center aren't adjacent. There isn't a lot of wide swaths of available land in downtown Houston. It's also a part of the decision to keep the football stadium at the same location. Go Astros!Go Texans!Go Rockets!Go Javelinas!
shaydre1019
Idk why everyone feels the stadium needs to have a spacey feel and be related to the nickname. I love the train and how when you enter the stadium you're entering a train station and it all ties together.I don hear anyone complaining that the tigers don't have a jungle theme or the pirates don't have planks and ships on their stadium. Everyone seemed to complain when the marlins tried to do something related to their nickname in their stadium. Those ads look terrible too IMO. As long as our uniforms aren't terrible I'll be happy though.

BigBubba
They SHOULD keep the team logo that the pennant was won under on each pennant, like it is now. They won 2 divisions with the rainbow, 3 with the 90's star, and then the 3 playoff appearances in the bricks. Don't get me wrong, I thing the pennants whoudl be reworked, but the element of having the old logo on it should stay.Agreed. Era-specific banners/pennants/other marks are always the way to go. I hate it when teams change their banners/pennants to match their current identity.Any word yet on if the 'Stros will be keeping their "Wild Card Champions" banner?Hopefully not. Wild Card banners are just flat-out stupid. Hopefully in the future we don't see "Wild Card Runner-Up" with the new format. Also, a black-gold colour scheme would look great IMO. Nobody cares about your humungous-big signature. PotD: 29/1/
ShlyKBMT
I go to Minute Maid Park a lot. Nothing feels gimmicky about it. It's very nice. The train ties into the railroad station right behind it. And the hill is rarely in play. A lot of parks have had quirky things in the past. I think the funniest argument against the hill is player safety. Wrigley has BRICK WALLS! Hurricane fencing isn't exactly pleasant to run into either and it's found in parks. The only thing I hate about it is the stupid name. Really wish the Landry family would have won the naming rights so it would be Landry's Field.

jigokusabre
Frankly, "Traditions" are just gimmicks that have been left in place for long enough. I have no objection to the Houston train, and more than I do with the Ivy in Wrigley.

Perfect Zero
If you've never been to Astros Park, you really ought to do so in the future. The park itself is really nice. Union Station is a thing of beauty and trying to make it space like is really stupid. The left field boxes and wall are right on the street on the other side and it is a tight squeeze to get toward the restaurant in center field. The seats are right on the action there and it's a quality ballpark. If they are indeed getting rid of Tal's hill, they need to at least keep the dimensions of the area. It is close to the right and left field polls, so keeping center field deep is a good idea.

FiddySicks
That's my biggest issue with the Astros trying to rework that park to give it a space like theme. Sure you can slap on a few new coats of paint and add some rockets and such, but you can't just change the fundamental architecture of the place, which really does have that south western train yard feel to it. The park is actually pretty beautiful, but it's already got a bit of a mish mash feel to it due to the jarring contrast between the train yard feel in left field and the warehouse like feel in right field. I think that going full out space theme would only make it worse. On 11/19/2012 at 7:23 PM, oldschoolvikings said: She’s still half convinced “Chris Creamer” is a porn site.)
