2012-13 NBA Logo & Uniform changes

Anyone else bothered by the secondary logo above the name? I don't mind when some teams do it, but in this case it kind of interferes with the simplicity of the uniform. Its the only thing that really bothers me. A waistband and/or slightly more involved side panels wouldn't hurt.

Regarding the elimination of the college paint lines on the NBA keys, I went to a Grizzlies preseason game tonight. They bought a new court this year, but it looks exactly like the old one, with the college lines still there.

Also I saw a Grizzlies "winter court" jersey replica in the store using the dark blue away template, not the alternate.

There's a great piece in the New York Times about how Jay-Z only owns 0.33% of the team and used this staggering equity to pop in the sound room and make them play more Santogold before retreating to a hidey-hole because the Nets were losing a lot. lol. Beyond that, there are some fascinating subtexts in the article/comments about how he's a prop for white billionaire developers to run roughshod over the neighborhood with some veneer of consent from the local black community, and he is totally complicit with being one because this deal enriches so many of his own business interests.

This team offends all of my deepest sensibilities regarding stadium socialism, made worse by the fact that they're trading on the aesthetic of "authenticity," which, as far as Brooklyn goes, is more about creating some sort of bohemian-bourgeois theme park/anthropological field study for trust fund babies from Suffolk County or Lake Forest or the Grosse Pointes or any other various points north, south, west, and east than anything remotely authentic. And everyone buys it, happily. I can't stand hearing about how these uniforms are "brilliant minimalism" or how the Unidentified Flying Atlanta Omni is "a part of the community" and not the engine of upmarket commerce dropped in from above that it actually is, just because they threw a bone or two to some "local vendors." I can't believe there's anyone who doesn't think this whole Brooklyn Nets thing is the most rampant, soul-wearying consumerism we've seen sports pull off in years.

remember the old hornets court? lol

Wow. That was allowed to exist?

I loved that court design. Even wackier was the Rockets' court, with a solid blue 3-pt area filled with stars, and a huge mid-court explosion:

I don't know about every one else, but it was a very sad day when the Rockets left this behind. They replaced it with one of the most boring logos in my opinion. I used to love that court/uniform set.

The Hawks had a similar design in the late 90's:

This Nets court from the 70's is pretty extreme:

A LOT of good historical court design pictures in that link btw^

The Pistons' blue lane with a red full circle is a classic court design to me (though I'd like to see blue sidelines with red baselines as they did in their anniversary season). It works well for the Suns because it mimics the orange circle in their logos. And while you could say the same for the Knicks if they had inverted their colors, I'd rather see a simpler court than that for them: blue lane with orange on the sides, with Madison Square Garden along the baselines so that the court only has the primary.

I'm still blown away that so many of you think the Nets set is too boring, simple, and dime store shelve-worthy. If you understand branding, you can appreciate what the Nets have done, simple as that.

Branding? What branding? They picked a boring, poorly-executed logo that STILL doesn't feature a net, then topped it off by hopping on the obnoxious retro bandwagon with bland plain uniforms.

You can have a good looking identity that doesn't involve much, but this new Brooklyn thing isn't working for me at all. I could find this type of jersey on a rack at Wal-Mart, I mean it comes off to me as hey, we have a lot of money, but we're cheap so we're not going to try really at all on this identity, sucker the people into a really cheap "timeless" :therock: look and sell it, make a huge fortune and make more money. Yea, we're that creative!

They don't need a net. That's thinking too literal.

Where is the Lakers' lake? Clippers' clipper? Yankees' Yankee?

Or how about Nike's goddess Nike?

You can build a memorable brand without going so literal. That said, I agree, the logo is poorly executed, but to write it off because it's missing a net is foolish.

check out the Nets court from the baseline

It looks like the Wizards will be wearing their home whites in Brooklyn tonight. Have the Nets worn their road blacks at home before? I suppose this would be a nice treat for the home crowd, who won't get many opportunities to see the road blacks in person otherwise (well, unless they hop on the train to MSG, that is).

I'll be at Barclays in ~2 hours to see for myself. :)
