Logo Revolts

Recommended Posts

After seeing the new logo the Las Vegas Wranglers unveiled this week, I remembered in 2010 when the Timbers unveiled their new logo and the fans backlashed and the team had to revise it. So I was curious if anyone else knows of any other instances where a team unveiled an identity or logo that flopped or caused an uproar and led to the team going back to the drawing board (excluding the Buffalo Sabres).

Didnt the fans outlash against the islanders fisherman logo cause the team to get rid of that one.

Weren't the Packers all set to go with Vegas gold in place of athletic gold when everyone in Wisconsin did everything short of storm Lambeau with torches & pitchforks?

Circa 1994 I want to say for some reason.

Didn't the Houston Dynamo MLS team change last minute also from like the Houston 1836. Forgot what the reason was.

That was because Hispanic groups didn't like the name since 1836 was the year of Texan independence.

Two NHL examples come to mind: the Ducks' first alternate and the Kings' Burger King jersey.

Portland's not the first Northwest MLS club to have an identity controversy:

Fans chose a name for the team in an online poll held between March 27 and March 31, 2008. The initial list of possibilities ? Seattle FC, Seattle Republic and Seattle Alliance ? deliberately did not include Seattle Sounders in order to provide a "fresh start." Despite the names having been selected through fan research and internal committees, the omission of the traditional Sounders name embittered many in the Seattle community.

Very interested on both of those. Any pics?

TCU a few months back.

AD realized current logo was dated (very 1990's) and decided to get Nike to do a new one as part of a rebrand. Nike came up with a new shade of purple, a new font and a new logo. New purple and font were used during the 2011 season (though never offically unveiled). The logo was supposed to be unveiled this summer, but leaked before that date. Reaction was not positive so the AD doubled back and decided not to use it. Some early pieces of Nike TCU gear for the 2012 season ended up getting the new logo, but the old frog has now replaced it on the newer 2012 gear. TCU separated the frog from the arched TCU and Nike told retailers not to sell anything with the new logo. I expect a new frog to be unveiled next season.

Because it was a terrible name. I believe the idea of the name was to reflect the year of the founding of Houston. Of course, that same year saw both the battle of the Alamo and the defeat of Mexico. Hispanic groups, who are a big chuck of the Dynamo fanbase thought the name courted Mexico bashing. I can see possible sore feelings but "bashing" seems like an overreaction.

There was some kneejerk anti-anti-Houston 1836 reaction but not too vigorous because, really, it wasn't that swell of a name.

BTW- the biggest supporter group for Dynamo is the Texian Army. Texian being the term for white colonist in Texas who would later win the Texas Revolution. Too bad they didn't get to use the ace unused 1836 logo.

Actually that supporter group used it with the group name replacing Houston 1836. Sucks because San Antonio's mayor courted MLS. But when the new mayor came in he moved the focus to getting a NFL team, mainly because he was friends with Tom Benson. San Jose could have moved to San Antonio instead of Houston.

The Iowa Hawkeyes unveiled a "meaner" TigerHawk in 1999, I believe, and people threw a fit. It's surprisingly still around on minor merchandise, but its fate was sealed when new football coach Kirk Ferentz said, "It's not going on our helmets" or something like that.

Details and pictures are in a similar thread from years ago.
