2012 NFL Season Thread

*whew* I think I avoided most of the oncoming crapstorm.

Well, as a loyal Seahawk fan... I'm happy that they won, but it feels so damned tainted. It's like someone gave me a nice juicy hamburger to eat without telling me that the meat they used was tainted with freaking E.coli.

Was it a bad call? Yeah.

Was it a blown call? Absolutely.

But, you know what? To me, this is something along the lines of 'Don't look at a gifted horse in the mouth.' I'll take it and run.

IMO, this whole fiasco ruined what seemed to be a good night. Wilson had a decent game and for one half, the Seattle D turned Aaron Rodgers into their own personal pinata.

*sigh* I like seeing them win, but not like this.

I wish Pete Carroll and the rest of the Seahawks would quit acting like they won the Super Bowl when all they did was undeservedly win a regular season game.

How are they acting like they won the Super Bowl?

Their twitter posts. I would prefer to see them show some integrity and not pretend like they won that game fair and square.

I see nothing wrong with what Pete Carroll tweeted. He praised his team for playing hard and competing to the end, which they did, and he praised the fans for showing up and being loud, which they were. The refs had no effect on either of those things, and people are simply hating for the sake of hating now.

By your logic, I guess the Steelers shouldn't have celebrated with the Lombardi after Super Bowl XL because Bill Leavy handed that game to them.

FTR I'm not a Packers fan.

Yup, Packers fans, the NFL just absolutely HATES your team.

No one, NO ONE, said or implied that.

Look, it's actually not as horrible of a call as many of you are making it out to be.

Yes, it was. There's no way anyone watching that play, especially under review in slow motion, can honestly say "yeah, that's a simultaneous catch." Yet they did. It's a terrible call by every definition of the term.

I wonder if the Packers fans who were okay with Scott Walker's union-busting are just as okay with Roger Goodell's union-busting. Well, I don't, but, y'know, rhetorical.

From this story, a supremely ironic reaction to this situation from Pete Carroll.

===

"From what I understand from the officials, it was a simultaneous catch, that's how they called it," Carroll told reporters. "Tag goes to the runner. Good call."

===

Pete, that would be "tie goes to the runner."

According to SportsCenter, fans have left over 70,000 voice messages at the league office due to last nights game.

Was that before or after they disconnected the line to Goodell's office?

I got mine in last night before they disconnected... I knew they wouldn't actually listen to it, so I just drunkenly slurred something to the effect of Goodell being a scumf***ing a**pile and left it at that. B)

So they admit that there should have been Offensive PI, but we all know that is NEVER called in a Hail Mary situation. How they rule simultaneous catch when Golden Tate is on the ground, meaning as a player his life in that play is dead and then he proceeds to yank the ball out of MD Jennings hands well he was already on the ground. It's a farce, it's done.

NFL Lore name = Fail Mary, Incompetent Reception. Anything else?

The NFL needed to come out and say that the officials screwed up. They couldn't even do that. They came out with some PC response that was BS. I'm fine with not giving the game to the Pack after the fact, but what's wrong with admitting that the refs screwed up? Sadly this happens in all leagues, like with the NBA how Stern dings players and coaches 35,000 regardless of the situation for commentating about officiating, and how Bettman in the last playoffs whined about teams complaining about obvious inconsistencies in regards to the Shanahan suspensions. About the games in the near future, to quote T.O, "Get yo popcorn ready".(And not in a good way). Can't wait for for "Bull----" chants in Baltimore on Thursday! It sucks because we should be talking about Torrey Smith's inspirational game, the crazy OT game with the Lions and Titans, Jamaal Charles putting the Chiefs on his back, and the Raiders upsetting the Steelers, etc, but that gets shoved to the back burner.

I've discussed this with Ross Tucker on Sirius and he has an interesting take, basically blaming the regular zebras for demanding too much. He says in effect they're not worth it. Well, IMO neither is any player worth $50 million, but they're getting it because they work in a $9 billion business and want their fair share of the pie. So I don't blame the refs for not wanting to be left behind.

From what I understand (which isn't very much, so take this with a grain of salt), it's not really about how much they are getting paid. It's about it being a full or part time job and the benefits that go with it.

In a way what's going on with the NFL is kind of microcosm for what's going on in the rest of the country. They're going after pensions and especially those where the employees don't even pay into. The refs are just first on the list. Team employees are going to be next and maybe even the players down the road.

Actually, the NFLRA is last. In March 2009, the owners approved to allow the individual teams to opt out of the league wide benefits plan. Nine teams have done so.

If you recall, two Colts assistants were (Tom Moore and Harold Mudd) retired earlier than they planned in order due to the uncertainty of the pension system and which teams were to opt out. There was also a fear that if some teams underfunded their plans, the coaches would not be able to take a lump sum payment to re-invest.

Love "Fail Mary". Methinks that's what I'll call it from now on.

As a Packers fan and co-owner, here's what I'll do: Until the regular officials return, I will continue to follow the Packers only by listening to their games on radio. No TV (the league's big cash cow) for me, and no money spent on NFL merch of any kind, as long as the replacements remain.

I just love it when the Cheeseheads are pissed.

I just love it when the Cheeseheads are pissed.

Except it's a lot more than Cheeseheads who are pissed. Even members of the Packers division rivals who have everything to gain from the way things turned out are coming out in their defense.

Fan of a rival team or not, to take the slightest bit of pleasure in last night's disgrace tells me you think fan bragging rights mean more than the integrity of a game that is entrenched in our culture.

Is this really something that's upsetting you? Please share some of these celebratory posts.

Is it bothering you that it bothers me?

I'm not losing sleep over it but I would still prefer for my team to show a little more honesty and aknowledge that they didn't win in the cleanest way.

I'm actually genuinely interested to know what kind of tweets would fire someone up and who is acting like they won the Super Bowl.
