Sacramento Kings rumor mill

I'd say Virginia would be the designation. "Virginia Beach" doesn't carry the weight that "Virginia" or even "Hampton Roads" does. Plus "Virginia Beach" just doesn't sound like the team wants to be taken seriously.

But most of Virginia's population lives nowhere near Hampton Roads. There are probably about twice as many people in Alexandria/Arlington/Washingsprawl as there are in Hampton Roads.

Who cares? That's not the basis for using the state designation over city. "Virginia Beach Kings" sounds like a failed team in the ABA 2000 or whatever it/was called. "Virginia Kings" sounds better, more professional and is still relevant. Anaheim doesn't carry the vast majority of the population of California, but they still did it. It was because at the time, "Anaheim" just didn't have the clout that "California" did. It's usually about which has more "awareness" outside the market. Yeah people may know it's in Virginia, but they may think it's just some beach in it's own spot on the coast. Hampton Roads carries more familiarity and most know where it's regionally located and what cities are within the region and the general area. But sometimes a regionally specific name just sounds off and the state just makes more sense.

Rough, very rough, explanation, but it's not ridiculous as you're trying to make it.

I'll admit, even though I think that I know a lot about geography, I didn't even know that area was called Hampton Roads before last week. Using that moniker would definitely be weird for a pro sports team.

Yeah. Just reading it, I read the team name as "Beach Kings", not "Kings" (kind of like how some people read Nippon Ham Fighters).

So "Virginia" makes it sound like they're pissing in the Wizards' lawn instead of the Bobcats'

Why would they move to Virginia Beach when Louisville has a brand new facility?

Because NBA teams don't do so well in smaller markets with prominent collegiate programs. When the Bucks are getting outdrawn by Marquette with 40+ years of history under their belt, it's hard to think of a scenario where a team in an even smaller city, with no local history, and an even more entrenched college program, would come out good for the NBA.

Illwauk, you have a great point about the competition between pro and collegiate teams. And if you think the Bucks problems are tough against Marquette, it will be bigger in Louisville especially UofL is one of the Top 10 College Basketball programs of all time. A minor league team would work like the Louisville Fire of the AFL2 from 2001-08. There is no way there could be a professional team in Louisville. Basically, UofL is the professional team in Louisville. Virginia Beach isn't actually a bad option compared to many other choices.

I doubt the Bobcats even have a lawn. They're more of a studio apartment-type team.

Virginia Beach had a UFL team (lol) called the "Virginia Destroyers" and every time I saw it, I misread it as "Vagina Destroyers." I'm mature.

That was my nickname in high schookay not really i was in mathletes and a.v. club

Meanwhile in Seattle...

http://www.thenewstribune.com/2012/08/29/2272263/more-land-purchased-for-new-seattle.html

The man hoping to bring an NBA team back to Seattle has bought another parcel of land in the area where he plans to build a new arena.

KING reports Chris Hansen's company closed Tuesday on the $8 million purchase of a half-acre property where the Showbox SODO music venue now sits.

IMO, Seattle is two steps ahead of Va Beach.

Hansen needs to own a team. Those elsewhere do not.

Agreed, although if Sacramento moves, I honestly think that the NBA wants to keep them in the West, to avoid realignment or which teams moves here or there. Sadly, Hampton Roads has been told they would get a MLB team, 2 NBA teams & an NHL team & all have failed, its like a joke that keeps going & going. With that said, I do believe that Seattle would the be the frontrunner of getting the Kings unless Sacramento gets a deal done, again without any issues. Then again, flying pigs have a better chance.

Why would Sacramento getting a deal done change anything? Sacramento got a deal done this spring only to have the Maloofs back out of it because they're broke. Until the Maloofs sell to Burkle or another Sac interest there won't be any deals in Sac. They city is done dealing with the lying scum-sucking moron brothers.

http://hamptonroads.com/2012/08/va-beach-board-spent-nearly-700k-so-far-arena-bid

The city's economic development authority quietly spent nearly $700,000 in the past 18 months laying plans behind closed doors to build a large arena and attract a major professional sports team.

That's a lot of money for something that hasn't even come into fruition.

$700,000 over 18 months? What is that, six, maybe seven FTEs? Doesn't seem like that much of an investment, all told.
