2012-13 NCAA Men's Basketball Thread

This is the most stressful non-conference game I've watched in a long time. Illinois is at Hawai'i (a great parting gift from Bruce Weber  ) and the only way to watch the game is a Hawai'i stream. And they were certainly not prepared for the amount of Illinois fans that would be watching this because you're lucky to get 30 seconds of game in without it buffering for a minute. Illinois trailed by as much as 15 and came back in the second half to lead by 2. Illinois blocks a game-tying shot only for Hawai'i to grab the ball and hit a buzzer beater to send it to over time. This would be bad if I could watch the whole thing, but waiting for this thing to buffer every position just makes it worse.

Post-game edit: Illinois down 2 in OT and DJ Richardson hits a buzzer-beater for 3 to win it. This was a game that Illinois should have won coming in but should have lost with the way they played. Now onto Maui were the games will be on TV and not on a crappy feed that cuts out every 20 seconds. And it was great listening at the end to the Hawai'i announcers that were total homers the whole game. Man, I love college basketball.

Ya know, I'm not exactly sure how Rick Barnes has been able to hang into that Texas gig for as long as he has. One Final Four in over a dozen years. Basketball standards must be incredibly low in the Lone Star State.

It's tough to judge a team at the beginning of the season. But we see it every year where majors get knocked off by small schools they just shouldn't lose to. A lot of the time, those majors turn out to have a decent season.

That's the thing about college hoops. You can lose to a team like Chaminade and still qualify for the NCAA Tourney with ease.

This year has to be it for Rick Barnes unless Texas makes a huge run in the NCAA Tournament. Texas always seems to be a team with great talent that's underachieving.

And Illinois was making every shot last night. It's so nice to see a team that moves on offense (Bruce Weber's motion offense didn't do much of that) and plays aggressive defense. It seems like they're still learning the defense at times, but when they're executing correctly it's great. I just hope Chaminade doesn't pull off another upset tonight.

So proud of my #23 Buffs! It's been great to see them playing such good ball, campus is going to have basketball fever this year.

Almost makes up for virtually having no football program these past couple of seasons. (Defending Pac-12 champs!)

How has this not been posted yet?!?!

138 points. By ONE GUY. In ONE GAME!!!

Only in Grinnell, folks! That team basically subscribes to the 'James West (Wild Wild West)' theory of hoops, which is very simple: Shoot, shoot, shoot some more and then ask questions when you score about 160-170 points.

Correct. It's "attack basketball" aka the the Doug Porter system. It is a system in which they openly trade the opponent's two point shots for 3PT attempts. Their opponents often shoot over 60% from the field.

The kid also took 108 shots. He was 52-108 from the field and 27-71. Grinnel is the same school which a kid had 34 assists in a game five years ago.

Not to take anything away from the player, but what does a team gain by running up the score and winning by 75 points in Division 3? Is that really something to be proud of? If it was a close game it's understandable to score that much. But what kind of coach keeps the starters in, and continues to press when up that much?

Take a look at the boxscore.

Taylor played 36 minutes, but out of the other 18 Grinnell players nobody played more than 15. They also had more offensive rebounds (37) than defensive (22). It was a bit for them to get coverage. Typically, their most guys average 12-14 minutes.

Been stuck watching highlights of this Illini team this year. Are they for real?

They've looked great so far this season. Their offense is unlike anything you've seen Bruce Weber run since 2005. No more holding the ball and throwing up something bad as the shot clock runs out. They've been outrebounded a few times, so it remains to be seen how their bigs do come Big Ten season. But Groce's offense is guard-oriented and it seems like their current guards are a better fit for this offense than Weber's motion. They've definitely exceeded expectations so far, but got a pretty easy road through Maui. But this Illinois team is definitely better than the 9th place in the Big Ten that were projected pre-season.

A head coach can only coach one team.

Just saying.

And that has the Illinois A.D. somewhat relaxing. Groce really needs to have a good season because the A.D.'s other two big hires have been faceplanting right out of the gate.

How does a player score 138 points and have zero assists?
