Hey all - I'm designing a series of "Diamond Dictionary" prints using baseball's awesome slang terms and phrases. The first one focuses on hitting and I had a blast illustrating them. I hope you enjoy!

I'm a Rangers fan so I hope Hamilton resigns, Miami makes me sick, and I can't wait to hang out at the Winter Meetings in Nashville.

No way Gomes deserves a 2 yr/ $10 million deal. I thought the Red Sox would be finished with poor decisions like that.

It's a joke that he was never inducted into the Hall of Fame. Maybe they'll pull a Ron Santo with him, where they'll only induct him once he can't be there to appreciate it.

Fantastic work, I'd love one for my office. How many others in the series do you plan on doing?

epper - Thanks for the kind words! I'm planning on designing two more - Fielding and Pitching. Right now I'm 50% complete with the Pitching slang.

I'm shocked no one heard of Rays 3rd Baseman Evan Longoria's $100 million extension to 2023.

http://espn.go.com/m...llion-extension

For a guy that's finished in the top 20 in MVP voting every year he's been in the league except this one, I would say they got a pretty good bargain.

That third base position is now set for at least the next five years. And credit the Rays ownership for still trying to field a competitive product despite all of their obvious financial burdens.

Also see Bucky Walters listed on the Veterans committee ballot. Really hope he gets in. Same goes for Jacob Ruppert who I'm really surprised to find out is not in the Hall. Also get ready for a big can of worms to be opened up with Bonds, Clemens and Sosa all in their first year of eligibility as well. Biggio, Piazza and Schilling round out what could be a strong or very strong HOF class depending on how the writers feel.

I don't know what's going to happen. I think all of those guys I mentioned that are on the writers ballot should be slam dunk cases with Schilling probably being the shakiest case. But looking at his body of work I can't really come up with an argument as to why he shouldn't be in. But I also thought Alomar and Larkin were slam dunk cases as well and they didn't get in on the first try. So who knows what will happen.

Schilling is one of those where despite the playoff heroics, the larger case is just shaky enough to make you ask, and if you have to ask, the answer is no. So basically Jack Morris with poor blood clotting, I guess.

B-r lists among Schilling's comparables a ton of HOVGers llike Kevin Brown, Milt Pappas, Orel Hershiser, and Bob Welch, plus Smoltz and Drysdale as far as HOFers go. Morris stacks up more or less the same, but also with Early Wynn, Bob Gibson, Bob Feller, and Tom Glavine. I don't think Schilling was much better.

Ryan Madson leaves the Reds organization with 11 million dollars and a grand total of 0 pitches thrown in a Reds uniform. Whatever. The Reds did just fine without him and his void allowed Aroldis Chapman to come in as the permanent closer. Who knows how the season would've played out if Madson had been healthy.

Now, Ken Rosenthal is saying the Reds resigned Jonathon Broxton, which opens the possibility that Aroldis Chapman could move to the rotation. I'm torn on that idea. He's kind of a head case with control issues and gets really frazzled with runners on base. I don't know if he's got a a Major League starter's mindset. Also I'm worried about arm fatigue. He was worn out from closing towards the end of last season. What's he going to look like in August with Dusty Baker as his manager?

I say, keep the bullpen as Marshall, Broxton, Chapman and roll with the same rotation. They had the same 5 guys for the entire 162 season and while that health streak is unlikely to happen again, if someone does go down, then you try Chapman as a starter.

Still though, if Chapman does become a good starter this is a nice setup of starting pitchers: Cueto, Latos, Bailey, Chapman, Arroyo

The problem I have with that HOF similarity score is that it only looks at career numbers and doesn't really take into account the era. Bob Welch has a career ERA of 3.47 and was top ten in ERA 5 times. Curt Schilling had a career ERA of 3.46 and was top ten in ERA 9 times. So even though the career numbers are pretty close, I would say Schilling was by far a better pitcher then Welch was and I don't think Bob Welch should be seriously considered for the Hall.

I do think the comparison between him and Brown is about right though. Played right alongside each other and by in large I thought the two were pretty interchangeable for their careers.

And Brown I think should be in as well and the fact that he didn't even get enough votes to qualify for next year's ballot I thought was a joke. If you don't think he was a Hall of Famer that's fine, but don't tell me he's not even close to being in, but Lee Smith is knocking on the door, and that's what the writers did.

If Schilling, Biggio, and Piazza get into the Hall this year but Bonds and Clemens are left out it'll be downright ridiculous. How bad is it going to look for the baseball hall of fame to exclude the all time single season and career home run hitter, as well as leaving out a guy with seven Cy Young awards? Steroids or not, these guys put up ungodly numbers that nobody else (Even others who did have the help of steroids) has even come close to. And don't give me this crap about the integrity of the hall of fame and how it must not be tarnished. It's the baseball hall of fame, not the Vatican.
