The Reds had 6 Gold Glove finalists, won 0 awards. Fitting end to a crappy October.

Jimmy Rollins at shortstop is this year's Derek Jeter, Brandon Phillips got robbed at second base, and I could make a great case for Jay Bruce and Drew Stubbs.

I hate sports.

How can you say you think Barney is a lock for the award one second, then go on to say that Phillips got shafted 5 seconds later?

Because I knew it was going to happen. I've watched a lot of both players and Brandon Phillips is the better second baseman. Barney got a lot of votes because of his errorless streak, but I don't think he's as good.

Yep. Phillips is better. Judging defense is tricky, but errors aren't the way to do it. Unfortunately, it's still a category the voters put a lot of weight into.

Oh well, though. Gold Gloves are only cool if your player wins them and you can brag on it. The truth is they're pretty worthless.

Fielding Bible Award, FTW.

Fielding Bible Award, FTW.

My hope is that eventually replaces the Gold Glove as the standard for fielding.

At the very least I would say its had an effect. I think its going to be much harder for guys going forward to be double digits in Gold Gloves, as it should be. Brooks Robinson and Ozzie Smith I think are the only two guys that have any right having 10+ gold gloves. And I'm not saying guys like Clemente, Mays and Keith Hernandez,. They were. But lost in the shuffle of those guys winning Gold Gloves every year are players like Richie Ashburn, Johnny Callison and Sid Bream, who I would say defensively were the best players at their position in some years. Each one of those players should have at least one Gold Glove to his resume.

I don't think your going to be seeing that quite as much because its getting tougher and tougher to just heap praise on players and not have it be questioned and I'm glad its getting more specific to defense only, rather then trying to figure out who was the best player at his position that was also a good defensive player. And I'm happy that fielding bible awards were given out to guys like Mark Buehrle, Franklin Gutierrez and Adrian Beltre, before their skills were recognized and appreciated by the people voting for the Gold Glove. I don't think I've seen a player yet win a Fielding Bible award that I would take major issue with. Been more then a few Gold Glove winners though.

As far as Darwin Barney goes. The guy led NL second baseman in fielding percentage and was second in chances. That's Ozzie Smith territory. Anyone infielder putting up those kinds of numbers would be getting my vote 10 times out of 10.

Well, I guess the Angels are gonna push HARD to resign Zack Greinke, because there's no other situation I can think of in which the Angels win by trading Dan Haren for Carlos freaking Marmol.

That's a REALLY solid trade for the Cubbies IMO.

My apologies, Cubs fans.

Ken Rosenthal said it was the Cubs who pulled the deal off the table.

Source: Marmol would have OK'ed trade to #Angels, but #Cubs pulled deal off table and trade is not happening. Angels talking to other clubs.

The Angels have 45 more minutes to decide whether or not to exercise a $15.5 million option on Haren. I'll get back to work now so I don't post any more bogus trades.

Haren doesn't really have much stuff left, does he? Quick look at B-R says his ERA, walk rate, hit rate, and strikeout-to-walk ratio have all gone up quite a bit. Marmol's most effective days as a closer have come and gone as well now that every knows to wait him out, but it's not like the Cubs really needed a $15 million innings-eater in decline. In short, get off their ass

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

I just hope its not the one they did with Bobby Bonillia,

For the 80 millionth time, the Mets MADE MONEY ON THAT DEAL. By not paying now you get to invest that money at a set interest rate. Do you really honestly think that the Mets front office was that stupid to agree to that if it didn't benefit them? They may suck and be incompetent, but they didn't get that wealthy by being stupid with real-life financial decisions. They make money, Bonilla gets a guaranteed annuity later in life. Win-win.

Edit: Bay will receive his full salary for 2013, obviously there's zero chance the 2014 option kicks in.
