Is it acceptable to have a second favorite team?

Recommended Posts

I find it perfectly okay to have a second favorite team as long as they aren't arch rivals of your favorite team, eg. Red Sox fan having the Yankees as their second team. Of course, I'm the biggest hypocrite as in baseball, my two favorite teams are the Red Sox and Blue Jays. Granted, they're not the biggest rivalry, but they're still in the same division.

You should just root for the Jays. The Sox don't need any more fans....

Rooting for teams all over the place is just too much to follow. A lot of these reasons are pretty flimsy. "Well, I was born in Houston, but raised in Atlanta, and my dad's from Chicago, but I went to college in Oregon, and now live in San Diego, but my wife's from Seattle, so I'm really an Astros/Braves/Bears/Blazers/Padres/Mariners fan." Just pick a team already.

I'm a Packers, Bucks, Badgers, and Brewers fan seeing as how I'm from Wisconsin, I was raised to like all these teams from my father! Lol. But in the NFL, I like the Texans since their inception, always have... I love Andre Johnson and J.J. Watt (Wisconsin alumni!) But I also like the Bengals because of my friend who's a die-hard Bengals fan.

In baseball, I like the Twins because of Mauer and Morneau, but I got into baseball in 2007, so way after the Brewers were in the American League and I missed the "Border Battle" days, and I also like the Orioles. Many players on that team I like: Adam Jones, Nick Markakis, and J.J. Hardy (former Brewers SS) plays there as well.

Basketball, I watch and follow, but I don't consider myself a die-hard fan of it like with football and baseball, so I'm strictly Milwaukee Bucks only. College sports, I'm a Badger fan, but because of me living in Milwaukee I like Marquette and UW-Milwaukee as well. UW-Whitewater, I have family that goes there, so I follow them as well.

In college sports, it is OK to root for another team in your conference once your team is eliminated.

No, this is the dumbest.

See, actually, I feel like this is the smartest of them all (well, partially dependent upon your league). For example, as the son of Youngstown State graduates, we were happy to see the money from Butler's two consecutive championship game appearances come to the YSU AD bank account. For members of the MAAC, they received twice the payout since Iona made the tournament field.

Eh I would make a modification to this that it is only acceptable if it is a conference foe that is from the same state. Or at least that's the attitude in Texas since a victory for a Texan college football team is a victory for Texans everywhere. Not sure that's the same attitude in other states though.

I don't see a problem in liking more than one team. Of the Big 4 North American sports teams I suport the Vancouver Canucks and Green Bay Packers, but I'm not going to stop watching when those teams are eliminated. Over the years I've liked virtually every team in all four sports for one reason or another. For example, there was a time when I didn't like the Montreal Canadiens, mostly because I was ten and they were "that French team". As I got older I liked the Canadiens because of their great history. I used to adore the Toronto Maple Leafs, but then they screwed with my idol Dave Keon, and since that time I have enjoyed hating them.

I think I'm going to adopt the Nords as a full-fledged Second Team if they ever come to be. Does Trois-Rivieres consider itself more aligned with Montreal or with Quebec City?

I'm not entirely sure, but judging from a quick search of the city's media outlets, I'd say Montreal. They seem to be within the Montreal media's sphere of influence more so then Quebec City's.

On the other hand French Canadian culture/ethnic identity in Montreal has always been a bit different from that of the rest of the province, so it could very well be closer to Quebec City from a cultural standpoint.

I have a team I follow in both leagues (except the NHL, I have 4 teams there)

NHL: Toronto, New Jersey, St.Louis, Phoenix

NBA: Toronto and Memphis (Also follow GS a bit)

MLB: Toronto and Arizona

NFL: New England and Seattle

NLL: Toronto and Colorado

On the bright side, everybody has brought life into this otherwise-moribund sub-forum.

I do not have a second favorite team in baseball or basketball since I have had a history of rooting for the Knicks and Yankees for a very long time that it is very hard for me to root for anyone else.

As for football and hockey I have teams that I kind of root for but have no real favorite out of the bunch since I wasn't raised on them.

NHL: Vancouver Canucks (some extended family members are huge Canucks fans), New York Rangers (They play in the same arena as the Knicks), New York Islanders (Used to be my most liked NHL team until they announced their move to Barclay's)

NFL: New York Jets (almost became a fan when they were trying to get a stadium in NYC but after that died so did my potential fandom) & New York Giants.

I pretty much have one team in each league, but the strength of my love for the sport really causes it to fluxuate. The more I love the sport, the more teams I have a rooting interest for. Baseball is hands down my favorite game, and I could seriously watch any two teams play at any level and be on cloud nine. Part of the reason I moved to Arizona was so I can work for clubs during Spring Training. Everyone keeps telling me I should/will gain a rooting interest for the D Backs, but I just can't. Their games are always fun, but I just go because I love the sport so much.

Baseball:

San Francisco Giants. Hands down my favorite team in any sport. It took me awhile to really establish this one though. I've always loved the Giants because of my mom's side of the family (My mom is the BIGGEST Giants fan I've ever known), but it was about 2007 when I started liking them to the point where I'd never waiver again. From 2009 on, I've watched or listened to every single Giants game and have found that they generally make my day, win or lose. I just love everything about them. Their players are awesome, their history is fantastic, they have the best announcers in the game, they have the best park in the bigs, and I really feel a link to my family and my past when I watch them. It's so bad now that I seriously want my ashes scattered at AT&T Park after I die just so I can be in the most beautiful place on earth in the greatest city on earth and close to the one of the most enjoyable aspects of my life, which is Giants baseball. I really love them that much. I miss the Giants so much during the off season it's almost pathetic :P

Oakland Athletics. I was a REALLY big A's fan when I was younger, and still like them quite a bit. Growing up in Northern California It was always the Giants and A's, and I was born so close to the Coliseum I could hear the blimp flying over head during their games. I even worked for them in radio from 2002 till 2006 and heard nearly every game. Since then, my love has faded a bit, but that's mainly because I NEVER get to see them on TV with the Giants pretty much dominating my home market and me being too close to them to watch them on MLB.TV.

St. Louis Cardinals. My dad is from St. Louis and his whole family are die hard Cardinals fans, so I've always had a soft spot for them. Plus, the classy vibe that so many of you hate is at least with some merit. Classy or not, they're an extremely well run organization that has quite a bit of luck as well. It's also nice to have at least somewhat of a rooting interest in a team who a lot of people absolutely hate. I normally can't stand those type of teams (Steelers, Yankees, Lakers), so it's nice to enjoy one of them.

Football:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I'm still not quite sure where this one came from, but from the minute I first started watching this team I was in love. Their defense was so bad ass, their fans seemed so rowdy, and they looked so freaking cool. Plus, they looked a lot like the University of Tennessee when I was really young so I usually rooted for them. I sort of regret at times liking them as much as I do considering they're usually trash and are impossible to find on TV out here, but I made the decision years ago and I can't change now.

San Francisco 49ers. This is fairly recent, and is only really a mild interest for me. They're the local team for me and I get to watch them every Sunday, so that helped. Plus, Colin Kaepernick is my favorite player in the league. I'm more of a fan of him than I am of the Niners, but it helps he plays for the local team.

Oakland Raiders. Same as the Niners, plus I had a cousin who was on the team back in the early 2000s. I've been to a TON of Raiders games and they're usually a blast. Tampa's Super Bowl win was one of the best sports moments of my life, but I think it would've been a bit more satisfying had it been over a team that wasn't the Raiders. And DAMN have they been brutal to watch since then.

Hockey:

San Jose Sharks. This one can be blamed on ICS and Puckguy. They're the local team so I've always kinda liked them, but those two guys got me really into the Sharks. they're downright pathetic come playoff time and absolutely disgust me, but I still love em. Thanks you two, you really ruined hockey for me :P

Philadelphia Flyers. When I first started taking an interest in hockey I knew instantly that I HATED the Red Wings. The Flyers played them in 1997 and got spanked, but they pretty much became my team after that. I still remember pretending to be John Vanbiesbrouck while watching playoff games in my garage and trying to stop a tennis ball from getting past me. I still like them quite a bit, and they're the only Philly team I'd ever even consider liking.

Basketball:

Nobody, really. Basketball is lame. Loved the Kings for a bit, but that faded, so now I pretty much like whoever Lebron plays for because he is the only player that has ever made me excited to watch basketball. I've said I'll root for the Suns now that I live in Tempe, but I just don't like the sport enough to really care.

College Sports:

How can you possibly like only one college team? There is just so freaking many of them!

Tennessee Vols: Family is from Tennessee and some of the first memories I have is of wearing my little Vols basketball uniform as a toddler.

Nevada Wolf Pack: I lived most of my life about 40 miles from Reno, so they've always been the local team. I also went to UNR for a bit when I first started college. I've been to a TON of Wolf Pack games and they're always a blast.

Arizona State Sun Devils. I go to ASU, live on campus, and have season tickets to every sport, so they're definitely my favorite college team now.

Being a Lions fan, I've attempted in the past to switch allegiances. I stuck through those brutal early 2000s teams, Joey Harrington, Matt Millen, etc. After the 0-16 season, I just felt like that was it for me. I thought to myself, I need a new team. I tried to keep it as close as possible geographically, and thought maybe go AFC to distance myself, like it wouldn't be likely that I'd be watching them as an opponent very often at all. I thought Cleveland Browns or Buffalo Bills, but I wouldn't be gaining anything whatsoever considering both of those teams are almost as bad and heartbreaking. My brother is a Colts fan, so I couldn't hop on that bandwagon. I looked to the hated Chicago Bears. Fairly close, lots of history, consistently competitive. It looked promising. But I just couldn't do it.

I guess it proved to me that I am truly a diehard Lions fan, so it was kind of gratifying.

This I do not understand. Dropping a favorite team merely because they change venues but stay in the same area?

Yeah, that's pretty god damn stupid.

I sorta get it, if you're someone who takes immense pride in Long Island cultural institutions, such as they are, that at least through all this garbage, they've been something to call your own and not just another New York City team. It's just the other side of the coin, with people racing to embrace the Brooklynettes because Brooklyn Brooklyn Brooklyn Brooklyn Brooklyn artisan fair-trade PSL buttrape
