Giants add memorial to CT shooting victims on helmet. In Comic Sans?

enough of this already...this is becoming a memorial mockery as to what team comes up with the better tribute.

Newtown is the new pink.

I completely disagree. I have not seen a tribute where anyone is really making any money. If you do a tribute, you could garner goodwill from your customers that would result in more sales/ratings, but that's a stretch. The whole problem with pinkwashing is that companies slap a pink ribbon on something to sell more product, often with no mention of how much money will actually be donated from the purchase or what cause the money will go to (awareness versus research). Also, if it has a pink ribbon it's probably Susan G. Komen, which is a pretty shady charity on top of everything.

You're right - it's not the new pink, which is a money making scam.

It's the new camo. A way for teams to show how much they care without doing much more than drawing attention to themselves (which is so totally, completely, positively, 110% not the reason they're doing it).

I think I can get on board with that statement. But is it possible to ever have a completely selfless tribute?

Probably not, but it's a matter of degree.

David Stern said something interesting the other day, that teams do these things not for the victims, but to make themselves feel better.

It's doing anything for the sake of doing something. I would add that it eventually degenerates into doing anything for the sake of being seen doing something.

So we've gone from the back of the uniform to the front.

I think this might be where I say the line has been crossed.

I agree. The message I get is not that Xavier cares, but it's all about making themselves look good

Like someone said earlier, at this point it seems teams are just trying to one up one another with who can come up with the best tribute.

In reality these displays do absolutely nothing, but given how terrible the whole Connecticut thing was, it's hard for me to get too worked up about it.

Xavier wore these today.

Do you think the people of Newton or victims' families know or even care about these far-fetched tributes?

Feels as if these Sandy Hook tributes have reached "paint it pink or camo and LOOK AT MEEEE!" status.

Maybe a tad bit much, but hey, crazy times.

It's a one-off thing and they're auctioning the uniforms and donating the proceeds to a victims charity.

If a team wants to use its pulpit a part of an organization-wide effort bring awareness or pay tribute, I'm fine with them using their uniforms as part of the effort, even extreme examples like this. It's when a team does the talk without the walk that they cross over in to "look at me" territory.

Yeah, I definitely think most of these are lame. If you're really going to pay tribute to the victims of these types of tragedies, take the money you spent on these jerseys/stickers/ect and donate it to a charity. And for the love of God, please someone just do it quietly. handwritten tributes are fine in my book, but it's really sad that even tragedies such as these are sensationalized to the point of merchandise being made for it. I mean, what the hell is the family of one of those kids going to do with a Bridgeport Sound Tigers jersey? I understand wanting to reach out to the families of the victims, but this kind of stuff just cheapens what happened IMO. I said it when the VT massacre happened, and I basically got basted for it, but it's gotten so much worse since then. I remember being on the MLB.com shop one day years ago and seeing a Yankees hat for sale with the VT logo on the side. WTF? That's nothing more than preying on people's emotions for the sake of profit. The way these companies latch on to tragedies and try to profit from them is really disgusting. Whatever happened to humility?

I'm going to defend this one. I believe you're talking about this hat?

ny-yankees-virginia-tech-hat.jpg

That hat wasn't worn by the Yankees on the field. It was worn by the Virginia Tech Baseball Team when they played the Yankees in a charity exhibition in March of 2008 at Virginia Tech:

Also, not only did the proceeds from the sale of that cap go to VT victims funds, the Yankees donated $1 Million Dollars to the victims fund immediately after the tragedy.

I still see those hats at the stadium every once in a while, and if it really was a money grab like you say, I think we would have seen a series of co-branded MLB-NCAA hats hit the market at some point, which we haven't.

I'm not sure about other teams around the league, but I noticed the Cowboys and Saints both got in on the Sandy Hook tributes this afternoon. Not really sure why they broke out the black decals this week and not last. Seems like they are just doing it for PR purposes, just to keep people from saying "[insert team name] doesn't care!" This crap is really getting out of hand.

I think the whole league did the logo thing.
