2013 AHL HOCKEY THREAD

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … American Hockey League President and Chief Executive Officer David Andrews announced today that the league’s Board of Governors has voted to discontinue to the current test of AHL Rule 82 (“Icing”), effective Friday, January 18.

“We believe that 564 games has been a sufficient test period for ‘hybrid icing’ and that the application of the rule has been positive for the most part,” said Andrews. “But because we have more than 300 players recalled to the National Hockey League each season, it is our view that these players should have the benefit of a consistent application of the icing rule in both the AHL and NHL.”

Read between the lines: "hybrid icing is stupid."

Also, Adirondack will be moving to Allentown, PA in a year or two. Adirondack (Glens Falls) was just a place holder for the Phantoms (Flyers) after the Spectrum was torn down.

You think they'll move to the Lehigh Valley?

I know they will. They started building the new arena in November. The arena is supposed to be done in 2014 for the Phantoms to move into. They even have a website setup for the arena, and the team is going to be called the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. http://phantomsarena.com/News.html

And I believe I read that the Phantoms would exit a year earlier if a replacement team can be found for their current arena next season.

That is great news. I miss the Phantoms being nearby.

They just signed an extention to play in Adirondack (Glens Falls) for the 2013-14 season. After that they will move to Allentown. http://www.saratogian.com/articles/2013/01/04/news/doc50e6f9d7e2e6c442461084.txt

for your viewing pleasure. My Griffins are crazy I swear. The Griffins won 11-6 and this game now holds the record for the most penalty minutes in a AHL game ever at 230 penalty minutes.

I guess Grand Rapids learned that if you can't win the fights one on one, just Zergling Rush the jerks.

I don't know about Kzoo. They have college hockey already. St. Charles, MO, maybe?

I do think the eventuality of Triple-A hockey is two separate leagues, neither of which has a very big footprint.
