What?!? A school actually using school colors and logos to create a unique look? Thanks, Nike!

The dog looks kinda dumb with his nose missing. Idk. Maybe that's just me.

Maybe it's a comment on how the English Bulldog has been over-bred to the point that it can barely even breathe anymore?

The whole "It looks like Duke Hookem's blood splatter!" thing isn't what offends me, it's the fact that at first glance, despite the huge name across the chest, I still had NO IDEA who these uniforms were for. A lot of the pictures obscure the name across the chest in favor of showing off other elements like the gloves and helmet, so until I saw a clear picture of the chest area, these could've been for just about any UA school. You know that it's a pretty flawed design when even members here have to look twice just to see what team it is.

Not sure if anyone's mentioned this yet, but Purdue is wearing matte Black helmets with train tracks down the middle.

Certainly hasn't helped improve their play, which is just putrid.

Depressing season for us Boiler fans.

Icky jingoistic uniform is icky and jingoistic.

I don't see anything jingoistic about it. It's simply Patriotic. In fact, I don't see how a football uniform could look "jingoistic".

Not unless we start exporting it and making foreigners wear it.

Ha ha, that's true. That would fit the definition of jingoism.

I don't think it's intended to be blood. Yeah, the "scratches" look a little like blood, until you notice that the blue has "scratches" as well..

It is almost certainly not intended to be blood, as you point out about the blue side. However, perception may trump reality here. Whatever the intent, someone should have caught that during the design and said "hey, people might think this is blood"...the whole ridiculous design would have been just as, um, good without that pattern.

Jingoistic? No. Completely stupid? Yes. I'm sorry, but I agree with the statement that these are nothing but "look at me, I'm 'patriotic'" uniforms. I guess they think that violating the flag rules is "patriotic". There was a reason the flag rules were made, and this is why. This is no different than everyone wearing pink to support breast cancer. Just because you wear something that screams, "look at me" does not make you a better supporter than someone who doesn't. Here's a question to ask, "What do veterans of WWi, WWII, Vietnam, etc. think of these?" Those are "Patriotic Americans" who respect the flag and what it stands for. How many of these kids wearing these ridiculous uniforms respect the flag and understand what it means? I don't think these uniforms make the kids any more "patriotic" or the fans more "patriotic".

I'm assuming the World War I veterans are pretty mum on this since they're all dead now.

“We are working with Nike and other providers to explore opportunities to expand SMU’s uniform combinations. It is important to us that the design reflects our image and brand. We will need another set of helmets (and storage for those helmets),” Hart wrote in his weekly column. “As you correctly mentioned above, we must determine where to place such an initiative in relation to our other needs. Auctions can be held to try to recoup costs, but generally any return on investment is indirect – recruiting, fan engagement, team morale, etc.

“In general, we hope to establish the design of our blue uniforms as our standard “look” – with a red and white version added. Then, if we add a second set of pants (red, blue or gray) and a second helmet we will have a variety of combinations to choose from. Of course, lock-up gloves, socks, cleats, etc. are also all part of the conversation.”

After meditating on the definition of 'jingoistic' and my feelings towards these uniforms for awhile, I still think it's accurate as an adjective. I'll let it go though.

My real complaint is the intrusion of important matters (veterans issues, foreign policy, the military, patriotism) into something I go to for a diversion from important matters (sports). And that the whole thing feels like a cover for the greed of college and professional sports. It's like, 'yeah, we're making crazy money from tickets, merch, concessions, tv rights, and everything else we can fleece you for, but we brought out some war veterans and donated pocket change to some charity so you can't criticize us.'

Blood splatters? C'mon people. If they were blood splatters why would they only be on the stripes and not the blue portion of the flag? Why would UA put blood splatters on a flag? Think before you react people

I think we all get that. But the reality is that the viewers of the game, those who don't obsess over the details of uniforms, are going to think that. Those markings are fare less noticeable on the blue portion. So that's how people will react. My question to Northwestern and UA would be "why not just go with the clean flag design and eliminate the possibility of ambiguity and negative (even if knee-jerk) reaction?
