Brooklyn Public Library Misspells Logo

The Brooklyn Public Library has updated their logo and opted to go with a "trendy" misspelling of Brooklyn, shortened to "Bklyn."

Thoughts? The article below (correctly) points out that trendy designers and retail outlets can get away with this sort of abbreviation, but you would kind of expect a place like, well, a library to actually use proper grammar and spelling, no?

Your thread title is a bit misleading, but I agree that a library may not want to do this.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

What institution outside of libraries need to mix it up and change their image more? I think its good for them to try to get younger and appeal to a younger hipper base.

if this were a trend I might agree, but BKLYN has been around for quite some time.

Pretty much... the BKLYN abbreviation has been around since the 19th century, and it's still on a lot of Brooklyn's older buildings.

Libraries are actually one of the most interesting projects to work on right now in architecture due to all the changes occurring with the needs of a library.

You say "needs" like it means something more than free porn boxes for homeless guys.

The library is still relevant?

I know you're being somewhat sarcastic, but you're right that libraries are really only relevant to a certain extent. A vast majority of research work can be done online as millions of published articles and journals dating back decades have been digitized.

I used to work at a library in high school and LOVE books. Yet even I haven't been to a library in years. I think the only reason I would visit is if I simply could not find an eBook version of a particular novel.

like Means and Illwauk said, thats not a trendy "misspelling" its a common abbreviation, a large part of the Brooklyn culture. it also shows their repositioning, who they're marketing towards. the type, color, and name "change" is more youthful and has a fresh, less serious tone to it. i think they did a good job

As do I. And I am a regular customer of theirs.

Haven't seen many homeless guys in either my branch or the main at Grand Army Plaza (which is a magnificent building, speaking of library architecture).

If anything, rising book prices are making libraries more important. Why would I want to spend $15 on a paperback that I'll read in an hour or two, when I have a library to browse as I like?

I also still use the library to borrow music CDs. Plus, digital books don't havy any appeal to me. Nothing beats turning a page, I guess.
