hockey week
There are certain names that somehow refuse to go away that are just terrible. Two immediately come to mind: Lakers and Blades. There is no way to really make a logo that displays what a Laker is. Yeah, we know what it is, but every team that uses it has a wordmark, an anchor, or a ship's wheel as their logo. It's a terrible name and it just keeps popping up.The other one is Blades. It's used a lot in hockey, and we all know it's the skate blades, and it might sound good, but what do you really show as a logo? It always ends up a skate, or occasionally, a sword, but none of them are really good. What other names are like that? Common, or at least not extinct, but terrible to depict with a logo. I'll respect any opinion that you can defend.

pittsburghsports16
Athletics. It's a little too vague. Also, saying that you're an "Athletics supporter" makes me think of something else...Wait, that's an idea for a logo!

The_Admiral
The Saskatoon Blades once had a logo based on what I presume is Saskatoon's most famous bridge:It's as good an approach as any, I guess. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

chuckymack
First one that came to my mind is 'Bills'.Others that haven't been mentioned are SuperSonics, Oilers, Islanders, Celtics, Magic, Heat, Steelers, 49ers, Sooners, and Cornhuskers. Sigs are for sissies.
hockey week
It's one thing when there is a single instance of a name, especially when it's at a high level. Steelers works in Pittsburgh, Bills works in Buffalo, and even though it makes no sense, there's no going back on the LA Lakers now. What I mean are names that keep getting used on new teams, junior teams, college teams, minor league teams, etc.I went to a college whose nickname was Lakers, and the running joke is that you have to define what it is before you graduate. Creating the new look for their ACHA team was brutally difficult. Then in one of the other threads, someone said that Blades was the winner for San Jose's NHL team, they went with Sharks, the #2 choice.WHY WAS BLADES PICKED?! Never is there a good logo with that, including Saskatoon and the old Erie Blades. Doesn't happen. Those kinds of names, when they get reused Again and again, and there's no reason for it. I'll respect any opinion that you can defend.

Dexter Morgan
Just about every team named after an animal, especially teams named after an animal that has no connection to the city. or any name that has no connection to the city. Magic? Wizards? Lions? Bears? Penguins? Jeez.
Gothamite
"Penguins" is an inspired name for a team that plays its games on ice. That it's alliterative is just a bonus. The Green Bay Packers Uniform Database! Now in a handy blog.
shaydre1019
Magic was apparently inspired by a trip to Disney world because it was magical or something like that...pretty sure I read that somewhere.
Hathaway Browne
^But WDW isn't in Orlando. or it just 'by association'?.. ie name the team Magic because people connect the city to the resort.
shaydre1019
Well it's in Kissimmee which is kinda the same thing. And I think part of the park might be in Orlando? Not sure. I mean the cowboys don't play in Dallas.
Hathaway Browne
I'm not trying to sound nitpicky, even Disney have used Orlando in advertisements (and Universal still do) just seemed odd to name a team after something that's not actually from the city they play in.Oh wait..... Utah Jazz.
Gothamite
No matter how one tries to justify it, "Magic" is an overwhelmingly stupid name for a sports team. The Green Bay Packers Uniform Database! Now in a handy blog.
