Oregon State Unveils New Logo and Uniforms

Reasons why this logo is awesome:

  • The previous logo looked like a jagged rodent about to have a stroke.
  • It has a fantastic curvature that lends itself perfectly to a football helmet.
  • It actually looks like a beaver, but doesn't have some buffoonish snarl or over-detailed elements. Very balanced.

Why this logo might not be so cool:

  • People hate everything.
  • Doesn't look stupid enough.
  • More stripes or something.
  • I hate Nike

I'm picking up on another reason why people my find OSU's new logo unpopular.

  • I'm a jealous Oregon Ducks fan

(You folks know who you are.)

If they can remove the "logo above a wordmark" helmet mark, it's fine by me.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

I can't for the life of me understand the love for this thing. Unpopular opinion I guess (which doesn't include a hatred for Nike or anything), but I think it looks downright awful. The shape just seems so forced and it really looks strange. I honestly think that had I not known it was for the Beavers, I'd have a hard time identifying what animal was in the logo. And please, for the love of all that is holy, put it on an orange helmet or add a keyline. This current trend of stripping keylines off of logos is so terrible.

yes an improvement, but that's not hard to do. no matter how you look at it, what style you go for, a beaver logo can't be easy. it dosent look like Fraser's work to me, there are some odd shapes in the eye and ear area, but perhaps he had a hand in part it?

the silhouette isn't the best, theres nothing that reads as a beaver from that but not too concerned about it because i get the feeling it's going to mostly live on black backgrounds. while i don't really find this one that great, i don;t think its too poor either. not a timeless design by any means, but it works in 2 color (or 1?) well and could last for a while without feeling old or dated. it's okay to me.

I'm getting a lot of the same feelings too. I feel like I want to load it up in a design program and mess with it to make it seem a little less stylized and a bit more like a conventional beaver logo. The eye is what is bothering me the most. I feel as if I really want the eye to be more fierce and ominous as opposed to the somewhat scared or timid look it seems to have.

That being said, I love the fact that it has movement and evokes some sort of swiftness and speed. It is certainly streamlined, which the previous one was not. I'm sure the Nike folk spewed a whole wheel barrow full of horse$#!t when they presented it to the OSU brass to define the look. I think it can definitely work but I will reserve full judgment until I see it within the context of the whole identity. Really curious to see the word mark/font they created. It can make or break the entire thing.

EDIT: I will say that the more I look at it the more I really like it. That furry little $#!t is starting to grow on me :)

I think the bolded portion of your breakdown is exactly why I DO like this. I'm sick of every animal sports logo having to look fierce or intimidating. While you certainly wouldn't want it to look scared or timid (which I don't think the beaver does), not every animal needs to look like it wants to tear your face off.

The shape is odd on it's own, but does seem like it will work very well on a football helmet. I hope the give it the "Carolina Panthers treatment" and put this logo on a black helmet with no keyline

I might have to agree. I have now looked at it about 20 times and its really growing on me more and more. I take back the fierce eyes comment and stand behind their decision to go with the current look. I can't remember the last time a logo has grown on me so much so that my initial opinion has dramatically changed in a matter of a couple of days.

I'm pretty sure this is another example of Davidson's continued work for Nike. So as it's been every other time there was probably an amazing logo left on the cutting room floor.

Guess we should keep an eye on Dribbble, eh? Haha :P

Cuj, it does look a lot better on a black bg... which makes me dislike it even more. When you're "hiding" the largest part of the logo to make it look better, isn't that kind of defeating the purpose?

I think it's more a case of designing with purpose. If you know this logo is going on a helmet, designing it like this makes a lot of sense.

I much prefer it against the orange/white. The logo loses all of it's flow when you remove the border.

I disagree. I think I know what you mean by "flow," but to me, the outer black shape is too odd to create any desirable effect. It's much more dynamic, free and smart when placed on a black background, thus eliminating the black outline, which is the clumsiest part of the logo.

For what it's worth, I mostly like the illustration style here, and I thought it was a Davidson at first glance. Those little round highlights like you see on the eyes are a recurring element in his work at any rate.

I still don't have a website, but I have a dribbble now! http://dribbble.com/andyharry

  • 2 weeks later...

On my iPhone here, but per Portland Oregonian columnist John Canzano's twitter feed from 10:50AM PST...

@JohnCanzanoBFT: In case you wondered, Oregon State will debut its new football uniform on Monday March 4.

A few days post "leak" and still, after viewing the new logo, i'm instantly reminded of Miami's logo, that's rarely used:

it is used on their football uniform though.

I'm actually using that logo for my entry in the NCAA Yakball NIT. Hope I'm allowed to say that.

Also, tramp stamp logo placements need to go as well.

Bingo.

Texas Tech looks ridiculous with those "Buns Up" stamps on their asses.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but this is one of my all time favorite logos.

But regarding the OSU logo, i kinda like it. I'll hold most of my judgement until I see applications.
