Rare team matchups

Recommended Posts

The "Dirty Bird" Falcons have been mentioned here before (specifically against the Brady-era Pats IIRC), but there should be a lot for them. That specific look lasted from 1997-2002 (1990-96 had less red), in a time when uniform changes were happening left and right, and then the Falcons finally changed theirs too. I'll look into it later today, but there should be pics of them against the "look at how 2000 we look" Rams, the white-helmet Jets, the "angry" Dolphins, the McNair-era Titans, and possibly the "holy crap do we look terrible" Bills, and there may also be pics of them against the "ny" Giants, the spear Redskins, the bird-face Ravens, and/or the Pacific blue Seahawks. (What about the Millen-era Lions? Did they add black in or before 2002, or was it later? I don't recall right offhand.)

1998-falcons-at-jets.jpgFalcons vs. Jets, 1998, in a battle of two of the NFL's best teams that year. 44-year-old QB Steve DeBerg is being sacked by the New York defense in a game the Jets won 28-3; his presence in the photo arguably makes it even rarer and more stark a contrast between old and new (although, the Jets' unis were based on throwbacks and the Falcons were in just the second year of those road uniforms, so ymmv).

Not as rare as you might think- these sets coexisted for three years and were in the same division for two of those years, so they met at least four times. Still, Dirty Birds vs New Millennium Rams seems like a clash of two different eras, even as '90s stars Terrance Mathis and Aeneas Williams battle it out for a pass.

A few rare match ups from the final 3 seasons of the California Golden Seals.

5 home games vs Washington (1974-76)

(The larger photo was from an article about the Caps lone road win their first year, but I couldn't find confirmation of this. The goal scorer, Wayne King, only scored 5 goals in his career, but again no idea who those were against.)

2 home games vs St. Louis (1973-74) - last year of gold Seals jersey, first year of Blues jersey with Y-W-Y stripes

1996 - "Shield" Ravens take on the block-number Steelers. This was the only time these two particular uniforms matched up, as the other time they played Steelers were in black and Ravens were in white (I can't find pictures of that game). The Steelers changed to the italic numbers in 1997 and the Ravens changed to their current look in 1999.

(I can't find any better pictures, so this will have to do)

The white helmet Bills and striped helmet Bengals only met 3 times in the 3 seasons these uniforms coincided.

But 2 of them- 1981 regular season, 1983 regular season were blue Bills jersey vs. white Bengals jersey- according to http://www.gridiron-uniforms.com/)

Thus, the Bills-Bengals 1981 AFC Divisional Playoffs were the only time ever these specific jersey/helmet combinations met up

That's gotta be one of the first ever visors worn.
