Xist2inspire
I actually really like Juice, because of the fact that Florida's known for oranges and orange juice. Orlando Juice = OJ. Plus I think an orange/white/lime green color scheme could look really nice if done right. Instant marketing opportunities, too.To me, a lot of what goes into a good team name is the sport it's in. I'm not a big fan of singular names in football or baseball. They're both rugged, traditional, serious sports. They don't lend themselves well to non-traditional, abstract names, and that's what singular team names are. When they're used, they usually go for "cool" and "hip." (In football, they usually go for "intimidating" and "aggressive," which gets corny fast).Basketball and hockey, however, are much flashier than football and baseball, they both have a certain style and flair that the other two don't quite have. In fact, both sports seem to have lost a lot of their visual uniqueness as of late with the move toward more traditional, less daring looks. I've always found that singular names work better with those two sports.. "Cool?" Hockey's literally a "cool" sport. "Hip?" As primarily an urban sport, it makes sense for basketball to occasionally go in that direction (Not to overdo it, though). Tradition is the foundation of innovation, and not the enemy. Evil G
The Magic makes sense. It's Orlando, where Universal Studios theme park is and nearby is Walt Disney World. So I actually understand why the 9-year old daughter would think of that. The Bullets change was needed. Too much gun violence in D.C. at the time. The name won't return, even though it is awesome, especially due to the fact that we had 6 major shootings in the span of when they changed the name to now. Sport
I can't help but think people would associate them with the Flint Tropics.I can't help but think that a movie made in 2008 wouldn't have used the joke name Flint Tropics (a parody of all the geographically incongruous nicknames in basketball (LA Lakers, Utah Jazz, etc)) for their fake basketball team had the Orlando basketball team named themselves the Tropics when they started play in 1989. TaylorMade
I did some reading, and I found that out of the four finalists in the Orlando name contest, only one was a plural.HeatJuiceTropicsMagicOh man. They could have been the Tropics? Then they could have worn these beauties;

powersurge
I hated the Miami Heat name when it came out but I have grown to love it. Not sure if it is because the team has been pretty successful in recent years or that it simply grew on me, but I don't think it should be included on a list of bad singular nicknames. I don't think every singular nickname sucks...just most of them.
