Well, Mexico scored in their first game so I guess they can take solace in that.

If anyone missed yesterday's Spain-Tahiti matchup... well, it went about as expected. 10-0 romp for the Spanish.

I kind of feel bad for Tahiti. They were clearly outmatched and outmanned and it showed. Heck, this might be the worst team in Confed Cup history.

To be fair to Tahiti, they try to play unlike other teams in their position who all to often shut up shop and go for damage limitation.

Until a couple of months ago many of the squad didn't even have professional contracts, last night they played the world champions at the Maracana. I certainly don't begrudge them the opportunity.

I don't. Tahiti knew they were not going to win going in since they only have one professional player on the team. But part of sport is competition and the semi-pro teams still have the opportunity to win The FA Cup.

They won Oceania, thus won the right to play in this tournament. If you want to change the tournament so that federation is not represented, then change the tournament to no guarantee teams a spot.

I hope Oceania isn't guaranteed more than one spot for the World Cup. It's not the Olympics....it's a big-time tournament, and it's not enjoyable watching some team ranked in the mid-to-high 100's get their dicks handed to them by half-decent teams, much less the game's best teams.

They're guaranteed a half slot where they have to play another team from another continent. New Zealand made it in last World Cup, and did do a respectable job(3 ties).

Edit: Yeah, every World Cup it rotates on which continent they play for the slot.

Oceania isn't guaranteed anything. If you win Oceania, you go to a playoff against the 4th placed team from CONCACAF. The winner if that goes to the World Cup.

Edit: Just repeating what was already said.

Australia gave up on ever getting that 0+1 turned into just a 1, so they bailed on Oceania for Asia.

I just don't understand being enough of a dreadful cynic as to hate the Tahitian team. How is it that Oceania is going to improve--by cutting them off from competitions? They're FIFA members, like every other FIFA federation; they get their shot, too.

I really enjoyed watching them play Nigeria. They were overmatched, but still went forward rather than playing a negative, bunkering game. Their goal was terrific.

Tahiti could have played 11 behind the ball and tried to not get blown out, but they decided to try and attack and made the games entertaining. Good for them.
