New Carolina Hurricanes uniforms

Something's been bugging me about the way this whole thing went down. Not just the terrible design, but the whole package. The press conference, the corporate doublespeak, the video presentation on the making of the uniforms. And I figured it out. No one knew what the hell they were doing. Simple as that. These are hockey uniforms designed by people too dumb to know what they're doing, but just smart enough to pretend like they do. "Hangar effect" made that abundantly clear.

Yeah, it's a downgrade in my opinion. The uniforms they had had great personality to it with the storm flags around the bottom. The new look is like the Coyotes and Team Canada uniforms put in a blender and slapped their own logos on it. The simple look is nice, but it's plain and dull. The Canes can't pull that off.

The Canes can't pull that off, especially with the logo. There's no enough history or uniqueness to their identity to allow them to get away with such a bland jersey. It just adds to their mehness. Wouldn't you want to make yourselves 'pop' out a little more? I would - make a statement about who you are, don't just disappear into the background of just another team in the southeast.

I'm Danny fkn Heatley, I play for myself. That's what fkn all stars do.

As a Hurricanes fan, I have to say these are terrible and actually upset me. Any other time one of my favorite teams changes uniforms, I may dislike it, but I move on pretty quickly. These...I don't think I'll ever be able to convince myself to like these, especially when the old look was so great.

Looks like I'll have to try to get a few more years of use out of my Irbe jersey...

What's funny is that in one of the videos they posted, they specifically said they wanted this look so they would "stand out" or something to that effect. What a joke.

Do any of you know if the Hurricanes changed the Silver/Gray on their actual uniforms to a flat color from metallic prior to this upcoming season?

The reason why I'm asking, is because they made a point of it changing for the new uniforms, but official files I have indicate that it changed prior to last season.

(I'm confused.)

I don't believe they changed the colour of the metallic grey, Taking a closer look at the crest, it still looks metallic grey to me.

The NHL put out an email stating that the Metallic (White) Silver is now Flat Gray.

That "Metallic White Silver" designation, is to differentiate from the "Aluminum Silver" that a lot of NHL teams use.

It's an embroidery thing.

However, it is most definitely not metallic any longer.

Hmmm interesting. Wonder why did they had to change it?

Nothing new or creative by any means, but I'm not sure why people hate them so much. they're solid typical hockey jerseys. Not really any different from any other hockey jerseys ever - which is what the traditionalists want, isn't it?

They could have used a new logo though, probably.

No. "Traditionalists" don't want every new team to rip off every Original Six team.

So horizontal stripes are ripping off every Original Six team? If these uniforms look like any of the Original Six uniforms, then practically every NHL uniform EVER also does as well.

Dallas has a much closer resemblance to the Original Six than these Carolina uniforms do (basically re-colored Blackhawks uniforms), yet are being praised in comparison to the reaction to the Hurricanes' new look. Perhaps the problem is that Carolina didn't copy the Original Six enough.

Hockey uniforms are bland and unoriginal. That's because hockey fans complain when they are anything but.

Man, this is surely another case of "A CCSLCer could have done it better".

Jaghee could have done better...

Hell, even Cody21 could do better.

I could do better with a crayon on a napkin.

Comic Sans walks into a bar, and the bartender says, "Sorry, we don't serve your type here."

Patsox could... No he couldn't.

Not really, no. The Dallas Stars' home uniform is closer to the Rangers' look then the Blackhawks' look, but even then it's only the coloured jersey. Meanwhile the road is completely original. A simple striping pattern, yes, but no one else uses it. On top of that they use a completely original colour scheme that further differentiates them from any other team in the league, Original Six or not.

As for the Hurricanes? Their new red sweaters, which are baring the brunt of the criticism, use the exact same pattern the Maple Leafs use, and they use the exact same colours the Red Wings use. It's the reverse of what the Lightning did. They use the Red Wings' pattern in Maple Leafs' colours. THAT'S what people are upset about, that the Hurricanes took a colour scheme another, more established, team had used for generations (simple red and white) and took it too in a misguided attempt to look old timey.

Just like every Lightning/Leafs game looks like a scrimmage these days expect the same from Wings/Hurricanes games in Raleigh.

Hockey uniforms are bland and unoriginal. That's because hockey fans complain when they are anything but.

Have you even read this thread or the NHL mega-thread? If you had you'd realize that most people who bash the current Hurricanes redesign want to see them return to their old uniforms, which are anything but bland and unoriginal.

I'm sorry, but every point you've tried to make here about reactions to this new uniform set (while being condescending I might add) doesn't actually reflect what people are saying at all.

How the hell did this team win the Stanley Cup?

My theory has always been that Karmanos hacked into the NHL's Compuware-powered database and manually gave the Hurricanes a bunch of wins, despite not winning and possibly not existing.

But actually I think they just had an effective power play and puck-moving defense in a season of draconian penalty enforcement, beat up on a hysterically bad NASCAR Division, and then won some Game 7s, one of them against an Oilers team that Pronger and Roloson concertedly willed to the Final, except Roloson wasn't there to keep willing them. That was a weird roster, a real who's who of "hey, that guy's pretty good." Justin Williams is arguably the hey-that-guy's-pretty-goodest guy ever, in no small part because his name is "Justin Williams."

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
