Dream 30 for 30s

1980s drugs in baseball would be a good one.

Selfish:

  • The rise of Wisconsin football.
  • The rise and fall of Kirby Puckett

Other:

  • The NBA Draft Lottery (how it came to be...addressing conspiracy theories...how it has helped/hurt teams)
  • Something on Lloyd "Sweet Pea" Daniels (or maybe "playground" legends in general)
  • The "Merkle Game"...not much footage, though. Or just something on the crazy time that was the deadball era (read "Crazy '08" if you are curious about it)

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

Couple of my choices:

  • Game 162: As others said, this was a huge moment in baseball history and it would be interesting how 30 for 30 would handle it.
  • Doctors of Dunk: This was the Fab 5 before the Fab 5 came. These guys reinvented the dunk in college basketball and turned Louisville into a National power.
  • 1994 Strike (replacement players): It would be cool if they look at the strike from the replacement player's view
  • Others would be Fresno State baseball's cinderella run, 2008 Tampa Bay Rays, and the run of the 2007 New York Giants.

I would add Pearl Washington to that list as well, but as soon as I thought of him, I just figured why not do Big East basketball during the 1980's.

Just look at the coaches alone they had in the conference then. John Thompson, Lou Carnesecca, Rollie Massimino, Jim Boeheim, Jim Calhoun, Rick Pitino, P.J. Carlesimo. I don't know if you will ever see that kind of coaching depth in a conference again.

The Fresno State baseball championship wouldn't be all that good a movie. Sure, they had a great postseason run, but it wasn't like they came out of nowhere to win the national championship. They were #18 in the preseason rankings. They just underachieved during the season.

YES. The Merkle play would be an AWESOME one. That one ridiculous play ended up defining that guy's career in so many ways. And the whole situation with chasing the fans around the stands for the ball is probably the craziest story I've ever heard. And forget that stupid goat, it was "Merkle's Boner" that led to the Cubs curse more than anything.

Selfish:

A Ducks one chronicling the history of the franchise, starting with the District 5 team and going from there. (Starting in Anaheim, Disney, early years, Switch to Ducks, Stanley Cup, etc.)

A CFL one.

Other:

Yes, a Game 162 one

1919 Stanley Cup Finals Influenza Outbreak

Rise of merchandising in sports (One day people are wearing suits and dresses, the next day people are wearing licensed jerseys and shirts)

Add me to the Merkle pile. Anything on the '08 season would be awesome.

The 1924 Senators lone World Series championship would be a good one, too.

Then you should absolutely read Crazy '08 by Cait Murphy.

It's not really about the Cubs...but since they won, they come up a lot. It's not about the Merkle play, but there is a lot on it. It's about the whole bizarre culture of baseball (with some non-baseball asides) at the time. If you think players are jerks now...

I'll add...something on the Negro Leagues...maybe Satchel Paige. I read a biography and he was an interesting guy. Or just the Negro leagues in general.

I think my "dream" (which would be impossible to fill) would be for a bunch on the pre-1960 baseball...Negro Leagues, Deadball, Merkle, Ty Cobb, etc. but full of (non-existance) game footage.

I love those eras of baseball. Would love to see something on Ned Hanlon's "Rowdyball".

This! Could you imagine if everybody in the stands were wearing suits today?

PBS has a two part, four hour documentary already set to air in February 2014, titled, "The Negro Baseball Leagues- An American Legacy".

An in-depth documentary on the 2006-07 Winthrop Eagles, their 29-5 overall record, the first Big South team ever to sweep its conference schedule, tournament, and become ranked in the AP Top 25, then beating Notre Dame on the day before St. Patrick's Day (while we actually had a player from Ireland). The coach was Gregg Marshall of recent Final Four fame, our fan-favorite backup point guard died in a car accident 2 months later... the story writes itself. Hey, they can even use the cover of an existing documentary featuring a certain dapper young gent on the cover... :upside:

In all seriousness, I'd like to see something on how minor league baseball has reinvented itself after its popularity started to decline in the '70s. Maybe just something about minor league baseball life in general. I also really enjoyed the series ESPN had years ago about life in the NBDL.

1)The fraud known as Bruce McNall 2) Peter Ueberroth and the 1984 Olympics changing the way big sporting events were financed. 3) World Cup USA 94 and how it started to change perceptions about this "foreign sport" in this country. 4) The Silna brothers, and the deal that pays them handsomely nearly 40 years after the NBA-ABA merger.

- It might not be an interesting story at all, but I think it might be cool to see something about Cuban defectors in baseball and how they come to America

- The 0-16 Detroit Lions/The Curse of Bobby Layne (homer pick)

- Pat Tillman

- The Andre the Giant Story

- Superstition in Sports
