Red Sox Cap Talk/Rumors

I find something rather odd. Some people say that the "Hanging Sox" cap has been ditched, and others disagree. I'm not sure what to believe, because the Red Sox still have the cap as their main cap for their Home alt in their style guide, yet they haven't trotted out in these in years. But these caps are still being sold and the Sox are said to still have these caps ready for game wear. Anybody able to get me any definite answers on anything?

Also, anybody else hear rumors about the Sox potentially ditching the road alt and them breaking out the BP caps a few times more?

Thanks to all who reply!

I have absolutely no inside information, but my guess is the players didn't like the cap, although they wore it nearly every Friday for all of 2009 and for the first half of 2010. They didn't wear it at all in the second half of 2010, and it only made one appearance on 2011 before totally being scrapped last year. I read Francona preferred the traditional "B" cap when he was there. I haven't heard anything regarding the BP cap, but I'd like to see the 1975-78 red-crowned, blue-billed cap be added as a road cap. It would spice up their look. I remember being excited about the two alternates the Sox unveiled for 1997, but neither made it to 1998. Alternate caps (and jerseys, for that matter) seem almost forced in this case.

It's a shame they don't wear it more often. I like that cap. They could swap the outline from navy to white, but otherwise it's great.

I wouldn't mind if the Sox ditched the red alt jersey though. That thing sucks.

The red alt is okay in my opinion, but it does need a few modifications, and I plan on making a concept of an improved home alt. However, the road alt looks pretty bad in action. I wonder if the hanging sox cap is really still available for game use, as their style guide says so. I'd at least like them to break them out once this year.

Actually, I like the road alt. That may be because growing up I always remember the Red Sox wearing a navy jersey in some form (BP, Little League jerseys, fan T Shirts, ect), but it's way better than the red alt which, especially combined with the hanging Sox cap (which I feel should be worn with the white jersey most, and doesn't look nearly as bad with the navy set IMO) looks incredibly bush league and diverts too much from their traditional set. I mean just look at that picture above. Everything about that picture screams intramural league to me.

I've said this before but I'll say it again; the red jersey looked infinitely better with the blue piping. If they just did that, it would be a very respectable jersey.

I agree, I never got why they ditched the piping.

I remember being so disappointed with all the changes the sox made a few years back. They rolled out the new road jerseys and both alternates and they all looked like they took a combined 5 minutes to put together. No piping of any kind on any of the jerseys from a team who has one of the best home jerseys to use as an example of how you can be classic but stylish at the same time.

Scrap everything except the traditional home jersey and start over, using the home jersey as the template.

Exactly, I don't get why they went retro with the roads. For the superstitious, at least continue using something similar to what they wore during their last two WS wins. Some kind of piping should at least be on all jerseys. The alts seriously need to be redone, the road alt looks pretty bland and the home alt is a total mess. Redo the alts and the road unis now Boston!!!

A little off topic, but have the Marlins ever worn their orange game cap?

They did once or twice last year, IIRC.

Just once, kind of a shame since they were a fan favorite and the players got tons of orange gear because they thought they were wearing them more often.

So back to the Sox :L

Marlins wore orange caps twice last season, both early week home games (2 separate weeks) and both with the home whites.

Exactly, I don't get why they went retro with the roads.

The reason that they went retro with the road jerseys is because back in 2007 (I think?) the Sox played a game in San Diego where both teams went 80s-retro and the Sox brain trust loved them. So they updated the 80s unis a bit and what you see today is the result of that.

I'm not a huge fan of them, but they probably could have been done worse, I guess.

I knew that, but I don't get why they couldn't just keep them as a throwback alt.

Because not only are they infinitely better uniforms, but they follow the history of the team better. Sure, they won the world series the other ones, but that doesn't mean they were better uniforms. That's my opinion at least. Now, all the Sox need to do with the primary uniforms is bring back the old striped socks.

I've got a dribbble, check it out if you like my stuff; alternatively, if you hate my stuff, send it to your enemies to punish their insolence!

I love the hanging sox logo and think that the choice to make it their primary logo in lieu of the roundel logo was brilliant. That being said, putting it on a hat just doesn't seem to work for me for some reason. Not sure why but it doesn't. Maybe its because it lacks a white key line around the sox to bring them together a little more....who knows?

I know the preference of current vs. World series era road jerseys is completely subjective, but I couldn't disagree more. The currents just went too far in their "blandness" (is that a word)? Even just a red outline on the blue lettering would bring it to life. They have versions in their past that have it (I have a yaz picture on my wall like that). red online on letters, piping in same style as home, done.

I liked the world series era jerseys not because they won but because they were brighter and not so dull. I agree winning is not a reason to keep an ugly uni, I just think they looked better.

Everyone's tastes seem to differ dramatically when it comes to the Sox's road jerseys. I think I've made it pretty obvious that I am a huge proponent of their new road unis so I won't beat a dead horse ranting about why all of the elements come together to make it work. That being said, it is really interesting that the most common comment made in opposition or criticism of the jersey is the lack of red outline in the word mark. I wonder if it is simply just a case of people not being able to get past what preceded the new look and therefore yearning for a little more continuity or if it indeed needs the red. I personally love the fact that it is absent of any red in the word mark, which gives it a more classic look. It would be interesting to hear the opinions of someone who has never seen anything prior to the new jerseys and see if they still make the same comments. Who knows, maybe I'm way off *shrugs shoulders*

Yep, amazing how it all it takes is the addition of blue piping to bring the red alt from blah to beautiful. Bring it back, Henry!

And while we're at it, the original green jersey was pretty great too, before they used a stock BP template for the greens. Everything beats the boring navy road alts.
