My NFL Predictions for the 2013 season

S316

Recommended Posts

I'm a little curious about Indianapolis. That was one of the worst teams in the league in the turnover department last season (-12), and were in the lower 1/3 in pass and rush defense, as well as points per game surrendered. Those aren't stats that are indicative of long-term success.

Even with the high turnover rate, they actually still got lucky with turnovers. Luck in particular threw 14 dropped/deflected interceptions last year. If some of those were caught, their turnover problem would have looked even worse.

Additionally, the Colts were 9-1 in one-score games last year, and this was with one of the easiest schedules in the league. That trend is not going to continue this year. I still think they're a playoff team, but not necessarily a strong one. The AFC as a whole is looking really mediocre.

They're getting love because Russell Wilson has already shown signs of being an excellent QB with mobility and the ability to go over the top with the long pass, Marshawn Lynch has finally put things together and emerged into being one of the best RB's in the league, reliable targets, and then especially on defense, which I could write paragraphs about (but I won't).

Last year, I likened them to the mini-49ers, or like the 2011 49ers, both of whom were well on their way. Now, I think they are on a direct plane with the 49ers, and I think those are the two likeliest teams to emerge in the race for the NFC Championship. Hell, they really should've been there last year. Still can't believe the Seahawks let the Falcons save themselves with only 30 seconds on the clock.

It's been going on for as long as I can remember, but on average at least 5 new teams make the playoffs every year. Last season it was 4 so the number is still pretty decent. I think most people's predictions maybe have two or three new teams making it. So like in past years, there will be at least two teams that surprise the hell out of you and make the playoffs.

Obvious returnees can be found with the Giants and Saints in the NFC. Chargers and Steelers in the AFC, but like what teams could surprise and make a jump. I can't count Carolina or Minnesota, I had them making it last year, and a lot of people wouldn't be too astonished to see them make it in this year. I think my team in the NFC is Philadelphia, decent looking offense if Vick can stay healthy and Chip Kelly will be interesting to watch at the NFL level, and for the AFC I have Kansas City, probably underachieved a ton last year. Getting Eric Fisher is nice to protect Alex Smith, decent offense there and an underrated defense. I figure Denver can't be as good as last year, Peyton was out of this world, I figure he regresses, so KC could at least fight for that final wild card with probably Baltimore, Cincinnati or Pittsburgh. Cleveland as well could make some waves, need Weeden to continually progress.

And two at 1-15, including the Bucs, who were 7-9 last year and only improved in the off season. Yikes.

Both the NFC South and West confuse and scare me. I've always thought the West to be San Fran, Seattle as two elite teams with St. Louis just trailing and Arizona as a doormat. Now everyone is choosing the Cards as a sleeper pick. The South is interesting because a case could be made for all 4 teams there to be at least 9-win teams.

I see the Cardinals as improved from last year, by about two games. But they were 4-12 last season, so they still have a big hill to climb.

Tampa could very easily be a ten win team, but they could just as easily be a ten loss team. It depends on how Josh Freeman performs.

- Seattle will be this year's juggernaut. They're a very well rounded team and also have a very light schedule.

- Andrew Luck, while still good, will have a sophomore slump. The Colts will take a step back and miss the playoffs.

I think the AFC overall will be terrible. I had to reach for the 2nd wildcard. The NFC has a lot of parity and I think there will be quite a few teams battling for playoff spots. St. Louis, Detroit, New Orleans, Giants, Dallas, possibly even Carolina, Tampa Bay and Minnesota (who I think really overachieved last year).
