They've already alienated so many of their would-be guests (athletes and non-athletes alike) with all this, and with their general heavy-handedness, that it's sucking all the joy out of their buildup.China may be as heavy-handed in its own way as Russia, but at least they took care not to feed that image in the run-up to the Beijing Games.
