NFL '13 SEASON THREAD

Cujo

Recommended Posts

I did something last night that I thought I'd never do. I went to an NFL practice. I spent all day at the Reds stadium and my ride decided to go to the Bengals Family Night at Paul Brown Stadium down the street so I was kinda forced to tag along. I thought at least I'd get some cool pictures, but because I'm a knucklehead I forgot to bring my Nikon.

Anyways, some observations:

- watching a football team practice is even more boring than being involved in a football practice (which is a huge reason I quit football after sophomore year).

- Bengals fans, especially those who go to a free practice, are a completely different breed than Reds fans. My roommate commented that the air smelled like people who shower at the most twice a week. We began to refer to them as the great unwashed.

- knock off jerseys. SO MANY knockoff jerseys and the Bengals must be giving the counterfeiters fits because they can't seem to get the oranges or the number font or the tiger stripes or anything right on these things.

- Dane Sanzebacher is trying like hell to make the team. I'm rooting for him.

- The Bengals helmet looks as awesome as ever. Even in year 33 those things still dazzle me.

- There were a ton of interceptions, which I know happens in practice a lot because the defense knows the playbook, but a couple of them were just from bad Andy Dalton passes, which sorta worries me.

- Jermaine Gresham made a couple sweet catches. I wish he'd caught a few of those in the playoff loss.

- I bought a low profile orange 47 brand hat to match my black 47 brand hat, which brings my collection of those kind of hats to 15. I may have a problem.

I just ordered a gray 47 Brand hat. Has the Bengals logo inside of a circular patch.

I really like the 47 Brand hats. The fit my melon quite nicely.

I prefer them to newera's 59/50 and most other hats. They fit my head, but they're not obnoxiously large, and they require no maintenance like a lot of new era caps. Plus their designs tend to be more restrained than the New Era hats. Both of my Bengals hats have the tiger head logo (because I hate the B logo) and it's small.

I believe the count is now 11 ACL injuries? It's nuts. And I have my suspicions as to why this rash of knee and leg injuries has (seemingly) been more widespread of late.

It looks like San Diego is fearing that Floyd just tore his today.

San Diego actually had decent WR depth that could cover Alexander's ACL injury, to an extent.

Add Malcom Floyd to the mix of torn ACL's, and San Diego's already dismal outlook just became almost cover-your-eyes dismal. Yikes.

UPDATE: Just so that Lights Out and Ice Cap don't kill themselves, I should link this update to this post.

Bernie Kosar @ the 5:35 mark is fantasitcally funny.

So anyway, I got a chance to watch the Cleveland broadcast.

General observations:

1. Memo to Bernie: It was a goddamn preseason game. It doesn't count. The primary goal for the Rams was to get their many young players through their first NFL experience with few injuries and hiccups.

2. Related to 1-the Rams deliberately ran a very vanilla game plan because they didn't want to make things harder on the younger players and more importantly because there's no point in giving stuff away on film to early.

3. Kellen Clemens clearly killed Kosar's dog years ago.

Two things...

1) Has the new penalty for ballcarriers lowering their heads into defenders been called yet?

2) Love this kind of stuff. I think people tend to forget that under the helmets and beyond the hype and the big paychecks (for some at least), players are people who have feelings and dreams just like the rest of us.

===

Admittedly, New Orleans Saints rookie linebacker Rufus Johnson was caught off guard by his run of emotions before last Friday's preseason opener at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Johnson had imagined what it would be like many times since becoming a sixth-round pick of the Saints out of tiny Tarleton State, but the reality of the moment was still overwhelming.

"It was emotional; I cried," Johnson said Tuesday. "Just being out there on an NFL field was just so emotional, it was like a dream come true. Running out there through the tunnel with the smoke, I usually watch that on TV. But actually running out the tunnel was very emotional for me."

@ McCarthy, my grandson visited recently and while Saints camp would obviously have been our first choice, living near Atlanta makes the Falcons the only game in town. It was much more interesting though because the Bengals were there for joint practices. I'll post pics soon.

I was wondering...there was a guy there in a Bengals jersey but all the orange was fluorescent. Is that a fashion jersey or what?

If it was the same orange as like a hunter's vest then it's a knockoff. They're all over the city and it drives me nuts. I've yet to see an attractive or intelligent looking person wearing one.

NESN source says injury is "not serious." Maybe if Nate Solder didn't completely suck then this scare wouldn't have ever happened. He should be getting penalties on 3rd and short during practice, not injuring their QB.

What happened to Ryan Mallett?

He was injured in the Philly game last Friday. I'm not sure if he's back yet.

Well, I've said for years that the fan support for the Falcons here in Metro Atlanta was iffy at best. Now it's been quantified.

Emory: Falcons fan base second worst in the NFL

===

Instead of just analyzing attendance, revenue and profitability, Emory looked at team box office revenues relative to team on-field success, market population, stadium capacity, median income and other factors.

===

Saints? #4.

The study's webpage with rankings for all NFL teams is here.

BTW, Emory University is right here in Atlanta.

And not to pile on, but when I went to Falcons camp last week I was surprised by Steven Jackson. He looked...lethargic. That's the best word I can think of. Maybe he's just not accustomed to the heat, which is brutal what with the humidity. But he looked pretty ordinary on the few carries he had against the Bengals too. Guess we'll see what he's got left when the regular season tees up*.

* And of course since they play the Saints week 1 he'll probably hang about 225 on them. :D
