Teams that need new venues

I think the Clippers should move to the Honda Center. Whose with me?

There's literally no reason for the Clippers to move out of Staples and LA when the franchise is making money and selling tickets with the current arrangement. LA is a big enough market - especially when it comes to basketball - to support two teams.

Anaheim could have gotten them in the '90s, but it's probably not going to happen now.

The Clippers should at least get their own arena. I just like the Clips going to Anaheim because it's just a suburb of LA and it already has 2 teams. Yes, they are doing great (6th in attendance), but could they be doing better.

I wanted to put Ice_Cap on there, but I decided against it.

The Sudbury Wolves could use a new arena, but I don't think the Burgess family is willing to dig into their own pockets for it exclusively. Improvements would have to come from an increase in taxes as well as corporate donations, because the only way Sudbury would get a new arena would be if it were part of a multi-use convention centre.

This 100%! As much as I have enjoyed my 2 trips to the Sudbury Arena and as much as I like some of the small quirks about the arena, it sucks compared to the many of the arenas in the league. Just in the last year alone, there were a couple of power outages and a flooding. Also from what I have heard, apparently the Burgess family is very tight with money when it comes to the team, but I can't officially confirm that. I hope Sudbury gets a beautiful new facility soon (like maybe something similar to what the Soo has).

As for other teams in the OHL, the only other team that I think really needs a new facility is Plymouth. Even though the rink was built in 1996, it was built very cheap and in only 6 months. The seating is beyond uncomfortable (no legroom mostly) and the building is showing it's age a bit more than it should.

A fellow OHL fan? :hockeysmiley: Cool. OHL hockey doesn't get enough chatter around here.

Sudbury tangent:

The problem with Sudbury is that neither council nor big business seem to do a whole lot for the benefit of their community - at least based upon what I read in local news. Our mayor is trying to work with council, but it's frustrating because she's "not part of the old boys club". It's about as stubborn a struggle as the US House seems to be (without the extremists, but still). Council is often accused of keeping "slush funds", and we're getting lots of big box stores moving into town (including Target near where I live). There's also casino plans floating around to "liven up" downtown.

And I wonder why it's so hard to find a good-paying job in Sudbury. The good-paying jobs all seem to be in areas that I would need to go back into further student debtschool for (healthcare, mining, etc.)

Le sigh...

Right, see, but it's not as if the Clippers have decided to set themselves off as a suburban team. If anything, I'd wager there are more Lakers fans in the O.C. (don't call it that) than Clippers fans. It's just saying "there are two arenas, two baseball stadiums, why not?" without any deeper understanding. The Clippers are pretty committed to Los Angeles proper. Now maybe they should have moved to Anaheim permanently in '93 and gotten out of the dumpy old Sports Arena for good, but they didn't, and so here we are, and they're never moving to Anaheim.

I've long thought that buying and renovating the Forum would have been an intriguing option, but Dolan's already done that.

Being "stuck" at the Staples Center at a very low cost to the franchise is a great problem for the Clippers to have, though.

Its too bad the Clippers left San Diego, the name Clipper fits San Diego much better and they had awesome uniforms and a great logo.

The reason they left was poor attendance. They struck out twice with two franchises, and is barely supporting their current teams.

Actually basketball struck out 3x in San Diego if you want to count the ABA and the Conquistadors.

But I disagree with the "barely supporting" comments. Given how bad both the Padres and Chargers and their respective managments have been of late I'd say both are pretty well supported with the Pads being mid pack in attendance (and having the largest year over year increase in TV attendance in the league) and the Chargers had a long string of sellouts going until AJ Smith and Norv Turner drove the team into the ground. But walking around down here on a game day the amount of people wearing Chargers gear in particular is pretty staggering. But people in SD won't pay money to go see :censored:.

That said I agree on basketball. 3 strikes and you're out. And most basketball fans get their fix in SD watching SDSU who sell out their entire season 6 months in advance right now. No if SD is going to experiment with an indoor team again it'll take a new arena and hockey would be the better bet. Despite the location there is a strong hockey loving contingent in town probably due in no small part to the transitory population.

So you mean it's like Houston or Tampa Bay?

It was going to be on an old spring training stadium on the waterfront

Sounds like Al Lang to me. Not a bad location, not far from the Trop.

I went to the Trop years ago, and it's not as bad as y'all make it out to be... but it's still weird.

I read somewhere that despite the fact that the city of Detroit is now bankrupt, they still want to use taxpayer money to replace the Joe. True?

Being "stuck" at the Staples Center at a very low cost to the franchise is a great problem for the Clippers to have, though.

I was thinking the same exact thing, especially given that it's a quick drive between the Forum and the team's practice facility in the Playa Vista neighborhood. In fact that neighborhood in Inglewood where the Forum and Hollywood Park sit will be undergoing a transformation of its own, and I used to live in said neighborhood. Hollywood Park is closing down at the end of this year, and being re-developed into a mixed-use community (retail and housing) very similar to the area just to the east of the racetrack. Couple that with the renovation of the Forum into strictly a concert-only venue, Inglewood's days as the "City of Champions" will be long-gone, if it hasn't already.

The Clips just signed a lease extension for ten more years at Staples to take effect this upcoming season, and probably more than likely paying the same rent as before. The time for them moving to Anaheim for good was certainly during the mid-90s, when the Pond opened. It's been said that Sterling didn't want to make the drive from his Westside residences (Malibu and Beverly Hills) to Anaheim, but I also heard a story that he was actually pretty close to moving across the county line until negoitations broke down.

Frankly I agree. I don't get the desire to rush outside in Florida either. The weather is too damn humid down there to want to sit through a game outdoors. The Marlins realized that and moved inside and now the Rays want to do the exact opposite... Grass is always greener I guess. But unless they're going to build a park with a retractable roof the Rays are ultimately making a mistake.

NBA:

Bucks

No way... at 25-years old the Bradley Center doesn't look anything close to its age. The general sentiment around Southeast Wisconsin is that if the Bucks need a new arena so badly, they can find one in another city.

Tank,

What's your thinking on the Blues needing a new venue?

The Scottrade Center less than 20 years old, recently underwent some mild renovations, and is a perfectly good place to watch a hockey game (and basketball game on the occasions they take place there).

It's not mind-blowingly nice, but other than maybe narrow concourses (not necessarily more so than many other arenas), I can't really think of a negative. It's not a palace, but it's certianly not a dump. It shouldn't need any major renovations (although for aesthetics, I wish they'd replace all the seats) for another 10 years, and I don't think it's in jeopardy of needing fully replaced for quite some time (although you never know how quickly a sporting venue will fall behind).

I'd say "great place to watch a hockey game" based on the amount of organ music. I despise the blue stanchions, but that's not a structural issue.
