i am actually a huge fan of native american imagery but i keep my mouth shut around here because i know whats good for me

I really like Native American imagery as well, but there's a difference between Native American imagery and racist depictions. Wahoo is a racist depiction.

I wouldn't care if Wahoo made Natives jump for joy, that logo is hideous and shouldn't have even been used long enough to have this debate.

Just curious, with all this Chief Wahoo debate, is there any thought on the Indianapolis Indians name and logo? Being from the Louisville area, the Bats souvenir shop occasionally carries IL stuff, including Indians items. I always thought the logo was much more artistically attractive than Wahoo, certainly more stereotypically "Native American" with its style of shapes, lines, etc., kind of like the imagery you'd find on a Navajo sand painting, or moreso a rug, but with the name "Indians" I figured it landed in the same category as Cleveland's, regardless of imagery.

i don't like it because it's hard to tell what it is, and to anyone that doesn't know anything about native american art would really be confused as to why they were looking at or what it was suppose to represent. I personally like chief wahoo because he is fun looking and cartoony and what i grew up with as a kid, but now that I've gotten older i do see why it can be offensive to some people.

I have no problem with the Indianapolis Indians name, although if enough Native American groups took issue with it, I would certainly try to see their viewpoint. My issue with Cleveland isn't the team name, which is the problem with the DC football team. The Chief Wahoo graphic, however, is at this point shockingly tone-deaf and needs to be retired.

I agree. It's an arcane image that represents a bygone era of racial ignorance and intolerance. All societies evolve and it's time to evolve past these tacky ethnic representations in sports. Ignorance is not a tradition worth upholding.

Right guys, if you don't share the same exact opinion on the veterans on this board you will cause a firestorm.

Anyway, I've always liked the Orioles uniform. how often do the Orioles still wear those black uniforms anyway?

It is worn every Friday with the O's cap.

I seriously dislike the O's cap. I'd love to see them wear the black alternate with the road cap but then others would probably complain that they look too much like the Giants.

It'll never end tho...even when wahoo isn't on their uniforms and as a logo...there will always be throwback merchandise.

People won't be satisfied until its chris benoit'd.

I mean at least be happy the indians are clearly showing they are taking steps.

The silliest argument I've heard for keeping it is "tradition" or that it reminds them of the 90s when the indians were good.

Yea thats not a legit reason imo. To me the indians logo probably wasn't created as a racist logo, but more in the time caricatures as logo's were in, like the browns elf and such. Its just that instead of changing it at some point its somehow still their logo.

They should've changed it like 20 years ago really.

Yea maybe that would be a bit extreme.

But as I said....it just seems o me that somehow this logo still survived while most logos created around the same time have long been gone.

Like imagine if the golden state warriors still used this

Yea....I think its time for cleveland to let it go....they should've changed it a while ago....but I do wish they would use a better C logo, I dunno whats worse holding onto a "tradition" that offends some people or having a bland generic faux-throwback logo.

And on the other end of the spectrum, the Seahawks' uniforms, the new Florida State look, and the old Vancouver Grizzlies are tasteful depictions.

I would rather be bland then offensive.

See, this is my biggest problem. I understand not wanting to offend, but there's no reason why they couldn't change to a logo package that is tasteful and actually good. That block C is basically the worst compromise because it's SO boring. They don't need to make HUGE modifications to the block C look, but something to spice it up a bit would be really nice. Someone posted a concept with a C that had a feather on it that would work perfectly in that sense.

I get where you're coming from, and I agree. They probably should have invested in a design that was both unique and unoffensive. I'm just saying that if the choices are a plain block C and a racist cartoon I'm going with the plain block C.

It's just there's no good reason why the plain block C should be the only alternative. For now, however, it is.

Yeah, but that's not really good, either.

I think using a racist logo is clearly the worst possible option.

But the block C isn't "faux", it's what the team wore in 1902. It's a genuine throwback logo if ever there was one.
