McCall
That's an excellent sentiment.I also think there's a continuity there worth hanging on to at all costs. When a team changes uniforms, it creates a visual break from the past. Often, that's precisely the point. But when the past is glorious and worth celebrating, then that break is actually damaging to the brand. The Yankees don't need to water down their identity. They have something almost every other club would gladly trade it all for.the NBA team with the most history has a black, and a gold alternates, and i don't believe either of them damaged the brand or broke any tradition. I don't see why the Yankees can't have an alternate, a blue alternate wouldn't be the end of the world for them, it wouldn't damage their brand. As long as there is a NY on the hat everything else is fineIt's the pinstripes that carry the most history for the Yankees, not the NY. And every NBA team has most certainly diluted their brand with all the alternates over the years. If anything, it makes a stronger case for why the Yankees should not add one. https://dribbble.com/MakaioCall
RyanMcD29
Obviously the Yankees should stay away from doing a home alt at all costs possible, but the road greys are nowhere near as iconic as the pinstripes or the NY-cap. I think a sparingly used road alternate wouldn't muddle things up for the Yankees' identity. That retro vest from the page before looks like an interesting idea to go with and wouldn't be as jarring as going straight to a navy alternate, though a navy jersey could be good if executed properly. Again, though, I wouldn't want it to be a once-a-series type of jersey, just one to be worn about once a month or so to mix things up, and definitely never in the Bronx. Never put the Yankees in a vest. The only alternate I would like to see is a Subway Series alternate. It always bothers me when the road team wears "New York" on the road when still playing in their city. I would like to see the Yankees and Mets come up with road alternates for that series that either say "Bronx" and "Queens" respectively, or just feature the nickname. Plus, I think they'd sell a lot of those to the fans of both teams. Maybe you'd even see the Cubbies and White Sox do "North Side" and "South Side" roads. As long as there is a NY on the hat everything else is fineWell, that's just your opinion. I'll concede that basketball is different than baseball, in that (most of) it's facilities aren't "museums", and it's not really designed for the summer road trip, but I think that the yellow uniforms are absolutely a part of the Laker experience, and while their (and the Yankees) brand is so established that they could wear a pink alt and it wouldn't have any tangible negative impact, it still wouldn't be wise to do so. Most Yankee fans are very proud of the name Bronx Bombers, and most Mets fans are from Long Island, I don't think there are any fans who would be alienated by the appearance of the boro name on the jersey. phutmasterflex
So for the Chicago teams, you think "Southside" vs "Northside" would be a good idea? The reason why city names are on jerseys is actually mainly for the fans and for exposure. What if someone who doesn't know about the burroughs of NY and they see Queens vs Bronx. They're lost. MLB's branding takes a hit. So on and so on. I get where you're coming from, but you have to understand why MLB would never do that. They're marketing themselves not just to New Yorkers, but to the rest of America and the world. Go A's! Gothamite
They don't represent those boroughs exclusively, and therefore have no business putting the names on their jerseys. The_Admiral
You're not going to get a baseball team to wear jerseys that say "Queens" where the nickname goes. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
ror1997
They should stick with NewYork vs NewYork. Although, the Mets could wear a home Alt w/ grey pants. Yankees are fine on the road, since the Mets wear their name on home jerseys. The only time you should put a borough on your jersey, is if you use it for marketing and to gain a fanbase like the Dodgers did, and Nets do now. But also, there has to be another team in the area. Because if youre moving into an area, and there isnt another team, you're not trying to steal fans from anybody, they would just come because there's nobody else to root for. Brian
I stopped by the Reds official store on their MLB website and the amount of black hoodies, shirts, etc is sickening. I know the away BP jersey is 99 percent black. It appears the away dugout jackets will be black from the looks of it. It looks like they are taking two steps back and shoving black down our throats once again. They need to do as the Rangers. Addition by subtraction. If they HAVE to have a third color, why not harken back to the old days and add navy blue. I still prefer just white/red. The 1970 uniforms were pure perfection. How many other teams can you name the neighborhood they play in? Probably not many. North Side and South Side are probably the only other two. And both of those teams are very proud of where they play as well. And if they're marketing themselves to the world and not just New Yorkers, then why does the logo have an NY and the road say New York?

Legend
Am I the only Yankee fan who wants a alternative jersey? Just a navy top with the interlocking NY. I hate that none of my favorite teams have alternative Jerseys. It gets a bit boring.I know it tradition, but i would definitely go and but one right away, and so would a lot of people.Nope, I would love an alternate jersey. You can have a classy alt as a jersey, it doesn't have to be something crazy. I prefer having alternates being something creative for most teams, which they rarely do now, but for the Yankees I realize nothing like that would happen and I'm ok with it. My point was, the borough/neighborhood names are already an established part of the team brand, and having a one-off subway series/crosstown series jersey wouldn't destroy that brand. They'd probably sell a million of them infact. They're already marketing this way, why would a jersey hurt them any further? But what I was getting at was his saying that by putting a borough name on the jersey, they'd be alienating fans not from NY... I don't think that's true. If it were, wouldn't the pattern their look after a team like, say, the Angels, who don't feature any indication of what city they're from? zpqmaowl
There's a huge difference between fan-made designs on Red Bubble and what a major league team should wear. But I do await the 2014 Nike Pro Combat Yankees Crosstown Pride navy jersey with chrome batting helmets. the worst helmets design to me is the Jacksonville jaguars hamlets from 1995 to 2012 because you can't see the logo vary wall

More then half. They aren't unique at all. A road Uniform with "Yankees" on a grey top would be nice. Maybe a navy top with the NY logo could work. Or even a grey top with the NY like SF does. There isn't anything at all iconic about either team's road uniforms (although the Mets roadies do look damn good), and it'd be a decent way to work in a bit of civic pride without hurting either team's brand.
