The Big Ol' Counterfeit Jersey Thread

Recommended Posts

the internet is easy to order from and people don't want to pay triple digits for something as trivial as a sports jersey

You can order authentics from the Internet, too.

that are around 300 versus a 25-50 dollar jersey that if you can find a good one is virtually identical to the 300 authentic

If you believe that, maybe you should buy some counterfeit glasses too.

i said if you get a good one, i have been given fakes before that i had to search for the inconsistancy to reveal it's a fake because my dad got me a 50 bruins and patriots jersey both were virtually real except the manufacturers logos were embroidered and not patches, and the pats jersey wasn't water resistant, other than that everything else was right, then there was another bruins winter classic i got that was an obvious fake. it just depends what you get.

I seriously doubt they were virtually real.

I've seen maybe 1% of fake jerseys that are anywhere near 'virtually real' and not clearly fakes. Pretty much all fakes are plainly fakes.

Going to games, events, rallys, and other places where jerseys are aplenty, all the fakes have been easily identifiable.

I've encountered one "virtually real" fake, and I bought it. It wasn't so "virtually real" after I washed it.

I went to the flea market today..... I couldn't believe how many different people were selling fakes. It's like a bad plague. I looked at a few of them just for laughs and some are definitely better than others. I think the worst part of the jersey quality is the clunky NOBs and the"fake" flywire designs.

I was surprised to realize that some vendors are selling counterfeit jerseys inside AHL arenas.

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

I'm sure that we all have read into the very popular counterfeit jerseys thread, but I want to expand on a specific topic here today. I noticed that a lot of people have DEFENDED the practice of counterfeit jerseys in the thread, and that alarms me. First and foremost, I will be one of the first to admit, the prices that Nike or Reebok or Majestic are currently commanding for their products is pretty nuts. But you can't go and support these shoddy businesses. But I won't even get into the labor practices, we need to have a talk about IP theft. I am honestly shocked that a forum full of designers would have people that would actually defend IP theft. We need to protect designer's IP and not buy counterfeits, no matter the price. Don't say that you can't afford the real ones, because if that is the case, you shouldn't be buying these products, not supporting law-infringing businesses. Just wondering what the rest of the board has to say on this topic.

I think its safe to say that a majority of us agree with you.

While the majority agree with this sentiment, and rightfully so, there are reasons why people still buy counterfeit sports goods. I don't agree with buying fake jerseys for all of the reasons mentioned, but I really don't have any sympathy for these large companies who produce these jerseys on the cheap, and often with questionable labor practices themselves, and sell them for $300-$400 apiece. If these major companies really want to lessen the purchase of fake goods, they're going to have to change their pricing models. Most people who buy jerseys don't have nearly the intellect when it comes to this stuff that most of us here who really care about this stuff do. Most people see a great deal and that's all that matters. They don't even have the ability to think about the consequences, because they aren't even aware of the problem. If anything at all positive can come from counterfeit goods, it's going to have to come from the companies themselves by offering quality goods at reasonable prices. I've yet to hear any other solution to this problem that is really feasible.

Tl;dr: I don't support counterfeit goods, but I certainly understand why people buy them. These major companies really brought this problem on themselves.

And on another level, Reebok brought the NHL counterfeiting problem on itself by outsourcing production to Asia to save on costs while silmultaneously boosting prices. I don't think it's mere coincidence that NHL bootlegs started flooding the market right around the same time Reebok moved production of jerseys fairly close to the global epicenter of counterfeit goods.
