The Big Ol' Counterfeit Jersey Thread

I am guessing to be consistent most of you are also in support of SOPA and PIPA as well. I mean IP is IP after all.

You do realize SOPA/PIPA doesn't actually prevent piracy, and instead allows corporations to shut down any website they want, whenever they want, however they want, for any reason they want, without due process, right?

Opposing websites making and selling knockoff jerseys as the real thing doesn't mean you support corporations having the ability to censor the internet at their whim.

This.

SOPA is in direct opposition to the free market as the corporations behind the mainsteam news stations will be able to shut down the exploding alternative press. You know the people who report real news instead of some watered down corporate agenda...

I was at Sabres/Wings last week and I would say at least 60% of all Reebok jerseys there (Buffalo and Detroit) were highly noticable fakes, some I had my doubts about (could have been bad customization jobs. I did not notice a single CCM or Koho fake FWIW (Buffalo and Detroit).

Played "spot the fake" at the Outdoor Classic. It was ugly.

Here are some funny ones I found:

20111209135314522090509.jpg

Byfuglien never played for the IceCaps and it also has the NHL shield on the neck insert.

This is the first AHL fake I've seen. I wonder why they put Byfuglien's name and number on the jersey, though? Why not someone who has actually played there?

These Chinese fake manufacturers need to hire me as their hockey consultant to nip these things in the bud :hockeysmiley:

I have to agree it was dreadful, I saw a Kessel Leafs third, the white one from past seasons, with the Reebok writting on the back of the neck as opposed to the logo.

Did you by chance see me in my California Golden Seals jersey? I had many compliments (bow)

Nope. Most random jerseys I saw were a Erik Cole Hurricanes, a blank Whalers, and a Blue Jackets jersey.

Ok, I have to admit it to someone. I broke down and bought two fakes today. An Aaron Rodgers green jersey with the Super Bowl patch and a Bucs red Josh Freeman jersey. I have a few fakes that I purchased from fan fests that looked so spot on it was hard to initially tell they were fake (Peyton and Eli Super Bowl jerseys), and I have one or two I've bought that look pretty iffy but I haven't been able to find that particular player anywhere else (Mike Alstott white, my absolute favorite player of all time). I expect the Aaron Rodgers jersey to be really close, and the Freeman jersey to be a bit spotty, but still not awful.

I know the objections, and I agree with a lot of the points. But IMO the quality of fan jerseys have plummeted over the years and the price has done nothing but go up. When I saw the Gronkowski jersey that was posted in a thread earlier that was a terribly flimsy screen printed jersey that cost $100 or more it really outraged me. A bunch of you won't agree with my decision to support the fake market, and I don't blame you. But when there is a wider selection of jerseys available than the NFL shop offers, and when the quality is miles better than the screen printed shirts they offer for 1/5 of the price, it's hard to turn down. With all of the negatives of the counterfeit world, I hope it at least forces the NFL to offer a quality product for a more reasonable price. The market is so monopolized on jerseys it's almost insulting what they charge for such low quality crap. I know it's a rogue market with a TON of problems, but I hope it can at least force the NFL's hand in offering quality products.

I'm not trying to convince anyone, and I know some of you will always be firmly against the idea, and your entitled to feel that way and rightfully should. But for as bad as these fake markets are, I like that they at least give people the choice and maybe in some inadvertent way, it can be a good thing. If the quality was better and the price was more reasonable, I would never turn to the fake jersey market.

Quick question to everyone:

I'm in law school right now, and this semester I'm taking a seminar on Sports Law. In this class our grade is determined on a paper we write on a topic of our choosing (related to legal issues in sports, of course). Since I'm trying to get an IP certificate, my paper topic has to be related to IP. Today I just got the ok from my professor to write about the problem of counterfeit goods. I told him I really want to write about the sale of counterfeit jerseys, and he said I can write about that as a central topic, but if I have trouble writing 25-30 pages about it, I can expand it to other goods. Assuming that I can manage to make the majority (if not, all) of my paper to be on counterfeit jerseys, would you any of you be interested in me posting it (If I'm able to)? I figured since this has become a hot-button issue on this board, it might make an interesting read for some of you.

I doubt that's a counterfeit. Just looks like a misprinted fashion jersey, to me. The NHL has sold that generic jersey in previous years.

Actually, if the logo was right side up, it would look like the ones they sell at Target or Meijer.

...and this infringes on your constitutional right to own a Packers jersey?
